Solar Power, o 3º álbum de Lorde, um dos meus álbuns favoritos deste ano!
Há várias categorias que se pode dividir música, e eu acho que para mim há duas grandes divisões quando se fala de cantores atualmente: aqueles que fazem música tendo como sua prioridade criar um ambiente com cada música, ou até com o álbum em geral, e aqueles que dão mais prioridade à letra, que querem transmitir algo através das palavras.
Quando ouvi o single Solar Power pensei que o álbum iria encaixar-se mais na primeira categoria. Quando ouvi Stoned at the Nail Salon pensei que poderia encaixar-se também na segunda categoria, porque esta música é uma das melhores da Lorde em termos de metáforas e da construção da letra. Mood Ring foi o último single, com ambiente e construção de letra ao mesmo nível e deixou-me sem saber o que pensar sobre o que viria neste álbum.
Este álbum, para mim, não se encaixa apenas em uma destas categorias, mas em ambas, o que é a minha coisa favorita de acontecer em música. É um álbum que nos transmite uma calma, a sensação de estar na natureza e a sensação de estar a ver o nascer do Sol na praia. Ao mesmo tempo as letras são tão bem construídas, tratam de assuntos pessoais e de problemas da sociedade.
Para além disto, a produção é 5 estrelas, mais uma vez Jack Antonoff consegue usar instrumentos reais e sons digitais tão bem juntos.
1. THE PATH
A primeira faixa de Solar Power é uma música que apresenta a vida de Lorde de uma maneira diferente, e ao mesmo tempo diferencia a sua imagem pública da sua vida privada. Conseguimos quase que desenhar o seu caminho enquanto ouvimos a música e perceber onde é que ela está no momento em que a escreve, e o que conseguiu alcançar pessoalmente.
Começa com:
"Born in the year of OxyContin
Raised in the tall grass
Teen millionaire having nightmares from the camera flash"
Que basicamente diz "Nasci em 1996, na Nova Zelândia, lancei o meu primeiro álbum aos 16 e ser perseguida por paparazzi não foi bom para a minha saúde mental"
E a seguir refere que voltou para a Nova Zelândia para sair do ambiente de fama e para ter uma pausa.
Em "Arm in a cast at the museum gala
Fork in my purse to take home to my mother
Supermodels all dancing around a pharaoh's tomb" fala de quando em 2016 foi à Met Gala, não a primeira vez, mas a vez mais memorável por várias celebridades lhe assinarem o gesso :'), e de onde levou um garfo para oferecer à mãe
Nesta música há também uma desconstrução daquilo que normalmante se pensa das celebridades, que são pessoas superiores, que nos podem salvar, mas que na realidade devíamos procurar as nossas respostas para o que está à nossa volta, e mais próximo de nós, a Natureza. E isto é apresentado no refrão.
"Now if you're looking for a saviour, well, that's not me
You need someone to take your pain for you?
Well, that's not me
'Cause we are all broken and sad
Where are the dreams that we had?
Can't find the dreams that we had"
Aqui desconstrói também a ideia que muitas pessoas têm de que a vida das celebridades é perfeita, que estão sempre bem, e que alcançaram todos os sonhos que alguma vez pensaram ter.
E termina com a Natureza:
"I just hope the Sun will show us the path"

3. CALIFORNIA
Esta música é quase como uma continuação de The Path. E é interessante como o álbum começa com uma música que nos diz para seguir o Sol e esperar que ele nos diga que caminho devemos seguir, seguida de Solar Power, uma música sobre o poder do Sol e agora uma música sobre Califórnia, um dos estados dos Estados Unidos com mais Sol.
É também na Califórnia que está situada Los Angeles, a cidade de Hollywood e da indústria do entretenimento. É sempre visto como o lugar das oportunidades, quase como se fosse uma cidade de sonho que apenas trás coisas boas, onde qualquer pessoa que queira entrar numa destas indústrias vai e consegue alcançar todos os seus sonhos.
Mas quando realmente os artistas se mudam para LA, ou qualquer outra pessoa, apercebem-se que afinal não é uma cidade tão diferente das outras, e que até pode trazer outras coisas menos boas, como a atenção constante, a competição, a confusão de estar no centro de uma indústria gigante.
É interessante a sequência de músicas neste álbum exatamente porque Califórnia é um sítio onde maior parte do tempo está Sol, e Lorde seguiu o seu caminho, mas por vezes há vários caminhos que levam a sítios completamente diferentes, e temos de encontrar aquele que é o nosso.
Os primeiros versos falam do momento em que Lorde ganhou, em 2014, 2 Grammy's, um momento que ela sabia que iria mudar a sua vida para sempre. Fala também dos custos de viver numa cidade tão central na indústria.
Depois diz que apesar de tudo o que esse sítio tem de bom para oferecer, não tem saudades da competição que se sente, dos paparazzi, dos tabloides
"I'd pay it all again to have your golden body back in my bed
But I don't miss the poison arrows aimed directly at my head" - uma metáfora tão boa
E decide que não é onde quer viver
"Goodbye to all the bottles, all the models
Bye to the clouds in the skies that all hold no rain" - parece que quase compara a chuva inexistente das nuvens com a chuva metafórica abundante e psicológica de lá viver
E o refrão "Don't want that California love"
Depois volta a referir, e está a comparar Califórnia com um "golden body" (corpo de ouro), quase como um prémio, e diz
"But it got hard to grow up with your cool hand around my neck" - uma ótima metáfora para a toxicidade do ambiente
E depois o contraste com a sua casa em Nova Zelândia, um ambiente muito melhor, mas que por vezes quando cheira tequila (que faz parte do dia a dia de muitas celebridades em LA) ainda volta a lembrar-se desse sítio.
No final, tudo o que ela esteve a falar é um sonho, ela quer acordar, como se mesmo depois de tudo o que aconteceu ela ainda não conseguisse acreditar que tinha chegado onde chegou, a ter o sucesso que tem, e tudo à volta de uma indústria baseada na Califórnia. Se calhar esse caminho, apesar de não ter levado a um local definitivo, foi um passo necessário para estar onde está agora.
4. STONED AT THE NAIL SALON
Mais uma vez é interessante a ordem das músicas. Depois de California, temos esta, que é essencialmente uma reflexão sobre a vida, uma reflexão muito pessoal.
5. FALLEN FRUIT
Aqui já temos uma reflexão mais estendida ao geral, às gerações anteriores à nossa e ao que se está a passar neste momento na sociedade.
Fallen Fruit é uma música sobre as alterações climáticas, e como é um problema que está a começar a afetar-nos neste momento, e vai alastrar para a geração dos nossos filhos.
Lorde, numa entrevista com a Apple Music referiu "Esta é a grande perda das nossas vidas e vai ser isto que vai definir toda a nossa vida e o mundo vai ser irreconhecível para a geração seguinte."
"Isto sou eu a descrever um escape para algum sítio seguro no futuro quando o nosso mundo se tornar inabitável."
No primeiro verso diz
"We had no idea the dreams we had were far too big" - quase que a falar para as gerações anteriores e pensar que não iremos poder viver como eles, que os sonhos que temos em comparação são demasiado grandes para o mundo que nos deixaram
E depois é quase como um hino
"And we will walk together
Psychedelic garlands in our hair"
e é muito visual.
Na ponte é exatamente a ideia de encontrar um novo lugar para viver.
E quase das últimas linhas
"But how can I love what I know I am gonna lose?
Don't make me choose"
É aquele sentimento de não haver esperança para mudar porque os danos já são irreparáveis.
Fallen Fruit é, para mim, como Lorde representa a Terra já no seu pior.
6. SECRETS FROM A GIRL (WHO'S SEEN IT ALL)
E agora voltamos para o lado mais pessoal. Esta música é essencialmente Lorde a olhar para trás e a falar com o seu "eu" de 15 anos, a dizer-lhe onde está e para confiar no caminho.
Começa com uma parte mais pessoal, a falar das experiências que o seu "eu" mais novo está a viver.
Uma das minhas partes favoritas desta música é
"Couldn't wait to turn fifteen
Then you blink and it's been ten years
Growing up a little at a time, then all at once
Everybody wants the best for you
But you gotta want it for yourself, my love
You can take them if you want them, these are just
Secrets from a girl who's seen it all"
Isto é exatamente o que eu diria ao meu "eu" de 15 anos, mas é algo que também me recordaria a mim própria neste momento. É como se para além de estar a falar com o seu "eu" jovem, Lorde está a falar com qualquer jovem que esteja ou não numa posição parecida à dela neste momento.
Na 2ª parte da música há esta frase
"Remember what you thought was grief before you got the call?"
Que refere o facto de só sabermos o que é a morte quando a vemos de perto, mesmo que tenhamos desde sempre uma ideia sobre o assunto.
A outro desta música é a outro mais engraçada que já ouvi. É como se estivéssemos a entrar num avião. Estão a dizer-nos o que esperar da viagem e como a fazer. Tem a referência do carroussel que se usa em Stoned at the Nail Salon. "Sadness" (tristeza) é como se fosse um lugar mas não é o destino final da viagem, é apenas uma passagem. É onde a Lorde de 15 anos está. Mas ao mesmo tempo, tem de se habituar e encará-la para continuar a viagem, para chegar onde está agora.

Solar Power, Lorde's 3rd studio album, and one of my favourite albums of this year!
There are several categories in which someone can divide music, and for me, I always think about two major categories when talking about current singers: those who have the priority of creating an environment, a mood, with each one of their songs, or even with the albums in general, and those who prioritize the lyrics, who want to transmit something through words.
When I heard the single Solar Power I thought that this album would fit in the first category. When I heard Stoned at the Nail Salon I thought that it could also fit the second one, because this is one of the best of Lorde's songs in terms of metaphors and lyric building. Mood Ring was the final single, with the environment and lyric building at the same level and this one left me wondering what would come from this album.
This album, for me, does not fit only one of these categories, it fits both of them, which is my favourite thing to happen in music. It is an album that not only conveys calm, a feeling of being in nature and watching the sun rising on the beach. At the same time, the lyrics are so well built, referencing personal and societal issues.
Besides, the production is 5 stars, once again Jack Antonoff can use real instruments and digital sounds so well together.
1. THE PATH
The first track of Solar Power is a song that presents Lorde's life differently, and at the same time distinguishes her public image and her private life. We can almost trace her path while listening to this song and understand where she is at the moment she wrote it, and what she reached personally.
It starts with:
"Born in the year of OxyContin
Raised in the tall grass
Teen millionaire having nightmares from the camera flash"
Which is basically saying "I was born in 1996, in New Zealand, I released my debut album at 16 and being stalked by paparazzi was not good for my mental health"
And then she mentions that she came back to New Zealand to get out of the famous environment and to have a break.
In "Arm in a cast at the museum gala
Fork in my purse to take home to my mother
Supermodels all dancing around a pharaoh's tomb" she talks about when she went to the Met Gala in 2016, not the first time she went, but the most memorable one because a lot of celebrities signed her cast:'), and where she stole a fork to give to her mother
In this song, there is also a deconstruction of what is normally thought about celebrities, that they are superior people, that they can save us, but that in reality, we should search for our answers in what is around us, and closer to us, in the nature. And this is presented in the chorus.
"Now if you're looking for a saviour, well, that's not me
You need someone to take your pain for you?
Well, that's not me
'Cause we are all broken and sad
Where are the dreams that we had?
Can't find the dreams that we had"
Here she is also deconstructing the idea that a lot of people have that the celebrities' life is perfect, that they are always well, and that they have already reached all the dreams they ever thought they had.
And ends with nature:
"I just hope the Sun will show us the path"

3. CALIFORNIA
This song is almost the sequel of The Path. It is interesting how the album starts with a song that tells us to follow the sun and wait for it to tell us what path we should pursue, then a song about the power of the sun and now a song about California, one of the sunniest states on the USA.
California is where Los Angeles is, the Hollywood and the entertainment industry city. It is always seen as the land of opportunities, almost as a dream city that only brings good things, where anyone who wants to enter one of these industries goes and can reach all their dreams.
However, when the artists move to LA, or anyone else, they realize the reality of this city not being so different from the others, and that can also bring other less good things, like the constant attention, the competition, the turmoil of being in the centre of a giant industry.
The order of the songs in this album is so interesting because California is a place where the sun is shining the majority of the time, and Lorde followed its path, but sometimes there are a lot of paths that lead to completely different places, and we have to find ours.
The first verse talks about the moment in which Lorde won 2 Grammy's in 2014, a moment that she knew would change her life forever. She also talks about the costs of living in such a central city in the industry.
Then she says that even if this place has some good to offer, she does not miss the competition, the paparazzi, the tabloids
"I'd pay it all again to have your golden body back in my bed
But I don't miss the poison arrows aimed directly at my head" - such a good metaphor
And she decides that it is not where she wants to live
"Goodbye to all the bottles, all the models
Bye to the clouds in the skies that all hold no rain" - it almost seems that she compares the nonexistent rain from the clouds with the metaphoric and abundant psychological rain of living there
And the chorus "Don't want that California love"
Then she comes back to a previous reference, comparing California with a "golden body", almost an award, and says
"But it got hard to grow up with your cool hand around my neck" - a great metaphor for the toxicity of that place
And then the contrast with her house in New Zealand, a much better environment, but that sometimes when she smells tequila (which is a part of the days for many celebrities in LA) she still remembers and comes back to that place.
In the end, everything that she is talking about is in a dream, and she wants to wake up, almost as even after everything that happened she cannot believe where she was able to get to, the success that she has, and all-around an industry based in California. Maybe even if this path did not take her to a definite place, it was a necessary step for her to be where she is right now.
4. STONED AT THE NAIL SALON
Once again, the track order is so interesting. After California, we have this one, which is essentially a meditation about life, a very personal meditation.
5. FALLEN FRUIT
Here we have a more general thought, extended to the generations before ours and what is going on in the society at this moment.
Fallen Fruit is a song about climate change, and how it is a problem that is starting to affect us right now, and that is going to spread to our kids' generation.
In an interview with Apple Music, Lorde said: “This is the great loss of our lives and this will be what comes to define all of our lives and our world will be unrecognisable for my children.”
"It’s me describing an escape to somewhere safe that takes place in the future when our world has become uninhabitable."
In verse 1, she says
"We had no idea the dreams we had were far too big" - almost talking to the previous generations and thinking that we are not going to live like them, that all our dreams are too big in comparison to the world they left us with
And then it is somewhat like an anthem
"And we will walk together
Psychedelic garlands in our hair"
and it's super visual.
The bridge is exactly talking about the idea of finding a new place to live.
And almost at the ending lines
"But how can I love what I know I am gonna lose?
Don't make me choose"
It is that feeling of not having hope to change because the damage is already at an irreparable point.
Fallen Fruit is, for me, how Lorde represents the Earth in its worse.
6. SECRETS FROM A GIRL (WHO'S SEEN IT ALL)
And now we are back to the more personal side. This song is essentially Lorde looking back and talking to herself when she was 15 years old, telling her where she is now and to trust the path.
She starts with a more personal part, talking about the experiences her younger self is experiencing.
One of my favourite parts of this song is
"Couldn't wait to turn fifteen
Then you blink and it's been ten years
Growing up a little at a time, then all at once
Everybody wants the best for you
But you gotta want it for yourself, my love
You can take them if you want them, these are just
Secrets from a girl who's seen it all"
This is exactly what I would say to my 15-year-old self, but it is also something that I would remind myself of right now. It is as if Lorde is not only talking to her younger self but also any young boy or girl who is or is not in a similar position that she was in that moment.
In the 2nd part of the song, there is this phrase
"Remember what you thought was grief before you got the call?"
This refers to the fact that we only know what death is when we see it close, even if we always had an idea about the topic.
The outro of this song is the funnier outro I have ever heard. It is like we are entering a plane. They are telling us what to expect of the trip and how to do it. It has references to the carousel from Stoned at the Nail Salon. "Sadness" is portrayed as a place, but it is not the final destination and yes only a connection. It is where the 15-year-old Lorde is. But at the same time, she has to get used to it and face it to continue the trip, to get to where she is right now.
