Se eu já estava entusiasmada para o álbum depois de ouvir Solar Power , então agora que o segundo single saiu já estou a contar os dias para 20 de Agosto!
Stoned at the Nail Salon é uma música que tem uma instrumentação muito simples e natural, tudo tocado por Jack Antonoff.
Enquanto que em Solar Power temos a descrição de uma sensação muito superficial, esta é uma música que pela sua simplicidade e pela mensagem que pretende passar se centra num sentimento muito mais interior, e muito mais específico. A pouca instrumentação e produção ligam-se com a letra para formar um ambiente mais calmo e introspetivo, como se Lorde nos estivesse a fazer reviver essa sensação, ou os pensamentos que descreve.
Stoned at the Nail Salon centra-se no pensamento sobre a passagem do tempo, do facto de estarmos a ficar mais velhos e naqueles momentos em que nos perguntamos se estamos a seguir o caminho certo ou a tomar as decisões certas.
Lorde fala deste tema nesta música como se fosse um momento em que estamos num limbo, comparando-o a sensação de estar "stoned at the nail salon", que é uma coisa tão mundana e fácil de compreender.

Quando numa primeira vez diz "maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon"(1), depois acrescenta "maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon again"(2), porque é verdade, estes momentos não deixam de acontecer, é como se a vida voltásse sempre a dá-los porque realmente precisamos deste tempo connosco, desta introspeção, e não tem de ser uma sensação má.

Esta é uma das minhas partes favoritas e é tão bonito uma música que começa com um pensamento de sentir que está alguma coisa a faltar, passar por umas referências a coisas que realmente mudam com o tempo e não se pode fazer nada em relação a isso, tocar um pouco numa relação amorosa e acabar com num sentimento que raramente muda, e de nos devermos agarrar a essas pessoas enquanto podemos.
Contudo, mais uma vez, toda a música acontece neste limbo interior, e por isso acaba com a mesma "Maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon again".

If I was already excited for the album after listening to Solar Power, now that the second single is out I'm counting the days until August 20th!
Stoned at the Nail Salon is a song with simple and natural instrumentation, all played by Jack Antonoff.
While in Solar Power we have the description of a very superficial feeling, in this song its simplicity and the message that it's supposed to pass is centred around a much more interior feeling, and a much more specific one too. The little instrumentation and production connect with the lyrics to build this calm and introspective environment as if Lorde is making us revive that feeling or even the thoughts that she is describing.
Stoned at the Nail Salon is centred around the thought of time changing, the fact that we are getting older and those moments when we wonder if we are on the right path or making the right decisions.
Lorde represents this theme in the song like this is a moment when we are in limbo, comparing it with the feeling of being "stoned at the nail salon", which is so mundane and easy to understand.
When in a first time she says "maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon", she then adds "maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon again", because it is true, these moments do not stop happening, it's like life always give them back because we really need this time with ourselves, this introspection, and this doesn't need to be a bad feeling.
And Lorde starts exactly by telling us that:
"I love this life that I have

In the chorus Lorde talks more about things that time change, which seem very spontaneous and in reality thoughts that anyone could have
" 'Cause all the beautiful girls, they will fade like roses" - roses are beautiful too, but not forever, everything ages
" 'Cause all the music you loved at sixteen you'll grow out of" - times change, we change and what we like can also change; this line also references the music Lorde made at 16 and the difference from her debut to this album.
"And all the times they will change, it'll all come around" - like after being stoned, eventually you gain conscience againd and leave that limbo

We have the feeling of wanting to stay in a specific moment, but we know that we have to move on eventually, whatever that means.
And in the last chorus
"Spend all the evenings you can with the people who raised you" - comes almost as advice.
We all know what is really important and what times changing mean for us and those who are really there for us.
This is one of my favourite parts and it is so beautiful in a song to start with the thought of something being missing, passing through some references to things that really change with time that we cannot do anything about, toutching in a relationship and finally ending with a feeling that never changes, and that we should grab those people while we can.
However, once again, all this song happens in this inner limbo, and because of that it ends with the same "Maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon again".
