ENGLISH
Who has never
heard of the story of the 4 March sisters? I confess that until I saw the movie
in 2019, I had never seen or read anything about “Little Women”, unless
probably in one “FRIENDS” episode where they make some references to this
classic. And that´s the reason why I am writing about it.
This movie
was directed by Greta Gerwig, based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic (a book of autobiographic
inspiration published in 1868). This book has many adaptations, both for movies,
series or even theatre, being a internationally well-known story.

It is the
story of four 19th century sisters, all of them very close with each
other and with a great relation with their parents. Each one of the sisters
represent one art form. Meg (Emma Watson), the actress who leaves that passion
aside to build her own family. Jo (Saoirse Ronan), the writer who is tired of
cliches and tries to sell her books without having to listen that she could
never end a story where the main characters don’t get married, because that’s
what happens in real life. Beth (Eliza Scanlen), the sister who loves music and
plays the piano wonderfully. Amy (Florence Pugh), who loves painting and is
very talented in what she does but accepts to travel to Europe with her Aunt
(Meryl Streep) to well married.

The story of this movie is mainly centered around Jo March and her way of being in front of her time. Jo is the sister who tries the harder to make the difference. She doesn’t wear a corset, she loves to dress like a boy, and she doesn’t believe that women were made just to give love, that they don’t have only a heart, but also a soul and a mind, that they can also create and work. She is the character who does not agree with the society’s rules, who does not agree with the fact that a woman cannot be independent, that must marry to be included in the society. Jo wants to have a career as a writer, which is not easy because she does not want to write books with predefined endings or change her endings to the one that the editor says that will sell. She is a girl that fights for what she wants.
This adaptation stands out from all the previous others not because it changes the story, but because Greta was able to transform it with new emotions, new camera angles and movements, adding another perspective to the scenes. The story has two different years from which it develops two lines of action, and that results very well to know the characters and understand the changes that happened in their life. She gave the movie a new energy that reflects Jo and her story’s energy. Besides that, all the previous adaptations end the same way, while in this one the director added a touch of the life of the author of the book.
It is a beautiful story that deserves to keep being told.
