The Whale, mais um dos nomeados para os Oscars de 2023, com nomeações nas categorias de Melhor Ator Principal, Melhor Atriz Secundária e Melhor Maquilhagem e Cabelo.

A história centra-se em Charlie, um homem que, depois da morte do parceiro, entra numa espiral que o faz ganhar muito peso, ao ponto de não conseguir andar sem ajuda, não querer sair de casa, recusar médicos e hospitais, e viver apenas de fast food encomendada. Na realidade, a única ajuda que ele aceita é de uma amiga enfermeira. 

Eu fui ver este filme sem ter pesquisado muito sobre a história. Aliás, só tinha visto o trailer uma vez há muito tempo quando o filme foi exibido cá num festival de cinema. E fui completamente surpreendida. Parecia que tinha um nó na garganta durante o filme todo. Se há um filme que capta dor, e arrependimento, é este. Senti que os momentos em que cada informação importante é revelada foram super bem calculados, e a aumentar cada vez mais na importância.

O filme abarca muitos temas no geral, tem muitas mensagens para passar, quer sobre aceitação, família, obesidade e como outras pessoas o vêm, comunidades religiosas e o que a religião significa para cada pessoa, e redenção. Mas senti o filme como uma representação daquela história super específica de Charlie. É um daqueles filmes que se passa todo num único sítio, um daqueles filmes "de personagem". O que senti que realmente importava eram as relações entre personagens e o que cada personagem era, individualmente e em relação umas com as outras. Neste ponto, é um filme próximo de The Banshees of Inisherin. Mesmo que o filme se passe todo num único local, a forma como foi filmado e os ângulos escolhidos para cada cena fazem-nos vê-lo sem ficarmos aborrecidos ou repararmos que estamos sempre no mesmo sítio. Parece que para cada ângulo há sempre alguma coisa nova que nos dá a sensação de novidade. 

Charlie é representado por Brendan Fraser, e eu acho que ele merece imenso o Oscar para o qual está nomeado. Sadie Sink, que faz da sua filha, fez também um trabalho notável. A dinâmica entre estas duas personagens foi realmente muito bem servida por estes dois atores. 

Este é um daqueles filmes que não dá para falar realmente sem revelar informação importante, por isso talvez depois dos Oscars faça outra review que já possa ter spoilers. Mas, para já, recomendo imenso que o vejam!

The Whale, another nominee for the 2023 Oscars, with nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Makeup and Hair. 

The story is centred on Charlie, a man who, after the death of his partner, spirals and gains a lot of weight to the point where he cannot walk without help, he does not want to leave his house, he refuses doctors and hospitals, and lives only of ordered fast food. In reality, the only help he has is from a friend, who is also a nurse.   

I went to watch this movie not having done a lot of research about the story. In fact, I had only watched the trailer once a long time ago when the movie was screened in Portugal at a Film Festival. And I was completely surprised by it. It seemed like I had a lump in my throat during the movie. If there is a movie that is able to capture pain, and regret, it is this one. I felt like the moments when each piece of information was revealed were super well calculated, and rose in importance each time. 

This movie covers a lot of themes in general, it has a lot of messages to pass on, either on acceptance, family, obesity and how others see this, religious communities and what religion may mean to each person, and redemption. But I felt that the movie was a representation of Charlie's very specific story. It is one of those movies that happens all in one place, one of those "character" movies. What I felt was really important were the characters' relationships and what each character was, individually and against one another. In this point, this movie is similar to The Banshees of Inisherin. Even if the movie takes place in only one place, the way in which it was filmed and the chosen camera angles for each scene make us watch it without getting bored or noticing that we are always in the same place. It seems like that for each angle there is always something new that gives us this feeling of newness. 

Charlie is played by Brendan Fraser, and I think that he really deserves the Oscar for which he is nominated. Sadie Sink, who plays his daughter, also did a notable job. The dynamic between the two characters was really well served by these two actors. 

This is one of those movies that we cannot really talk about without revealing important information, so maybe after the Oscars, I'll do another review with spoilers. But, for now, I really recommend that you watch it!
