THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

Aqui vamos para mais um dos filmes nomeados para os Oscars e, tenho de confessar, um dos meus candidatos favoritos. 

Os Espíritos de Inisherin centra-se em duas personagens, Colm e Pádraic, dois homens que vivem numa ilha isolada da Irlanda durante a Guerra Civil, e na sua relação de amizade, ou melhor, na relação de amizade que acaba. O que acontece é que, de um dia para o outro, Colm simplesmente quer deixar de ser amigo de Pádraic, dando como justificação simplesmente o facto de ele ser chato, e que Colm está basicamente farto de gastar o seu tempo com conversas sem substância do Pádraic. Há aqui uma diferença grande entre os dois: Pádraic não precisa de mais do que a vida que vive, não precisa de deixar algo para ser relembrado por pessoas que não o conhecem no futuro, porque para ele ser lembrado como "simpático" é suficiente, e é o que ele se lembra das pessoas mais próximas para ele; pelo contrário, Colm quer deixar algo, uma marca, alguma coisa que lhe diga que a sua vida não foi desperdiçada, ou que valeu de alguma coisa, que deixou alguma coisa de significante. Tudo isto vai escalando ao longo do filme, ganhando proporções já muito fora de controlo e talvez até extremas e, de uma perspetiva exterior, talvez até desnecessárias. 

Uma das coisas que mais gostei neste filme foram as paisagens, a forma como a cinematografia mostra o ambiente onde eles vivem e o contraste que as imagens da paisagem calma contrastam com aquilo que a história nos está a contar, na dor e na tristeza de não só perder um amigo mas também na dor e tristeza que é sentir que se tem de acabar uma amizade. 

Este é um dos melhores filmes que já vi, e tem tanta coisa sobre a qual podemos falar. Um dos pontos mais interessantes é que nunca conseguimos dizer de que lado é que estamos, se estamos com Pádraic ou com Colm, porque até certo ponto conseguimos perceber os dois lados. Se por um lado percebemos Pádraic por estar confuso com o que se está a passar, com todas as informações que do nada Colm lhe diz e que o fazem pensar que talvez a amizade que tinha nunca foi genuína, também conseguimos perceber Colm, que tentou que a amizade durásse mas que chegou a um ponto em que talvez tinha de pensar nele, e que precisava de espaço, e já estava a forçar algo que não queria com Pádraic.

Este é, sem dúvida, um filme diferente de todos os que já vi até agora, tanto pela premissa como pela forma como a narrativa se desenvolve e os caminhos inesperados que as personagens escolhem.

Here we go to another movie that is nominated for the Oscars and, I must confess, one of my favourite nominees. 

The Banshees of Inisherin is centred on two characters, Colm and Pádraic, two men living on an isolated Ireland island during the Civil War, and in their friendship, or I rather say, in the friendship that ends. What happens is that, overnight, Colm simply wants to not be friends with Pádraic anymore, giving an explanation simply the fact that he is dull, and that Colm is basically sick of wasting time in Pádraic's conversations without substance. Here is a big difference between the two of them: Pádraic doesn't need more than what he's given, more than life, he does not need something to be remembered by people from the future who do not know him, because for him being remembered as "nice" is enough, and this is what he remembers of the people who were closest to him; contrarily, Colm wants to leave something, a mark, something that says that his life was not wasted, ou that it was worth it, that he left something meaningful. All this escalates throughout the movie, gaining proportions so out of control and even extreme and, from an outside perspective, maybe even unnecessary.  

One of the things that I liked the most about this movie were the landscapes, the way cinematography shows the environment in which they are living and the contrast between the calm images of the landscape with what the story tells us, the pain and sadness of not only losing a friend but also the pain and sadness of feeling that you have to end a friendship. 

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and it has so much that we could talk about. One of the most interesting points is that we can never say which side we are in, if we are team Pádraic or team Colm, because we can understand both sides to a certain level. If on the one hand, we understand Pádraic for being confused with what's going on, with all the information Colm says out of nowhere and makes him think that perhaps this was never a genuine friendship, we can also on the other hand understand Colm, who tried to make the friendship last but he got to a point where maybe it was time to think about himself, and that he needed space, and he was somewhat forcing something he did not want to have with Pádraic.

This is without a doubt a movie that is different from every other one I've seen so far, both by the premise and by the way the story evolves and the unexpected paths the characters choose.
