Este livro foi a minha leitura favorita de 2022 até agora. É, também, o meu primeiro contacto com esta autora, que me fez querer ler mais dela.

The Seven Hisbands of Evelyn Hugo é uma história centrada na história de vida de Evelyn Hugo, uma atriz super reconhecida, que tem agora 79 anos e que quer que a sua biografia seja escrita por uma personagem muito em particular, Monique Grant. Monique é uma escritora que trabalha para Vivant, uma revista, e foi através de uma falsa entrevista que só podia, a pedido de Evelyn, ser feita por Monique que Evelyn conseguiu chegar a ela e dizer-lhe aquilo que quer na realidade: que Monique escreva a sua biografia, a realidade do que foi vida, e que a publique após a sua morte e fique com todos os lucros. A razão do pedido de ser apenas Monique e mais ninguém é revelado no fim, tanto do livro como das "entrevistas" em si. 

O desenvolvimento das personagens neste livro é incrível, todas elas têm uma história e são quase como pessoas no sentido em que quase têm a sua própria vida. 

Ao longo do livro acompanhamos Evelyn e comparamos a sua realidade com aquilo que muitas vezes era impresso sobre ela em revistas e jornais, o que reflete muito a cultura pop de hoje em dia e de como podemos nunca realmente saber quem é que uma celebridade é realmente. 

Mas acompanhamos também Monique, como ela vê Evelyn, como ela muda ou descobre características suas e arrisca ao longo do tempo que passa com Evelyn e como tudo se interliga no final. Como nada é simples, como não há ninguém que seja apenas vítima ou apenas bem sucedido. 

A vida de Evelyn está divididas por capítulos que correspondem aos anos e o tempo da sua vida que passou com cada marido. E Celia. 

O livro trata de diferentes questões, e vemos como Evelyn e as pessoas à sua volta lidam com elas (entre elas LGBTQ+, SIDA, como as produções de filmes eram feitas, como os paparazzi são muitas vezes contratados de propósito, como o que os media só vêm o que querem ver, mesmo que o resto esteja bem mais à vista, e a dignidade na morte).

Uma das coisas que mais gostei foi que o livro não se centra apenas no desenvolvimento de Evelyn como personagem mas como ao chegar ao final conhecemos tão profundamente também Monique, Harry, Celia, Robert, Connor. Todas as personagens têm profundidade, mesmo aqueles maridos que foram simples acordos de casamento. 

A minha personagem favorita foi o Harry, um dos maridos de Evelyn, mas sobretudo o seu melhor amigo, e talvez um outro tipo de soulmate. 

E ao chegar ao final ficamos com uma perguta: o livro que acabámos de ler já é a biografia que Monique escreveu? A minha resposta inclina-se mais para o não, principalmente pelo facto de ter muito sobre Monique e muito no final sobre o que aconteceu ao pai e toda a reflexão de querer ou não contá-lo à sua mãe. Mas não se pode negar a nada súbtil autoreferencialidade do título do livro que estamos a ler com o título que Monique vai dar à biografia, que é exatamente o mesmo. 

É um livro que parte o coração e que nos faz pensar no modo como olhamos para a celebrity culture. Principalmente, olhar para o que não sabemos. E é muito, de certeza. Evelyn contou a sua história porque sentia que tinha de o fazer, por ela e por todos os que amou na sua vida. E é só por isso que a conhecemos, não é pelos jornais, ou pelos filmes. Disso temos a Evelyn Hugo idealizada. Só a quantidade de vezes que li "Não és como esperava" ou "isto não é como eu pensava que ia ser". É um livro magnífico. 

Recomendo imenso, e mal posso esperar por ler mais.

This book was my favourite reading of 2022 so far. It is also my first contact with this author, which made me want to read more from her. 

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a story centred on the life of Evelyn Hugo, a super well-known actress. She has now 79 years and wants her biography to be written by a particular character, Monique Grant. Monique is a writer who works for Vivant, a magazine. It was through a fake interview, for which Evelyn asked for Monique specifically, that Evelyn was able to get to her and tell her what she really wanted: for Monique to write her biography, the reality of what her life was, and publish it after her death and take all the profit. The reason for the request for Monique and Monique only is revealed at the end, both in the book and in the "interviews".

The character development in this book is amazing, all of them have a story and are almost like people in the sense that they almost have a life of their own. 

Throughout the book, we follow Evelyn and compare her reality to what was most of the time written about her in magazines and papers, which reflects a lot about the pop culture of today and how we can never really know who a celebrity really is. 

But we also follow Monique, how she sees Evelyn, how she changes or discovers characteristics about herself and takes chances throughout the time she spends with Evelyn and how everything connects in the end. How nothing is simple, how no one's only a victim or only successful.

Evelyn's life is divided into chapters that correspond to the years and the time of her life that she spent with each of her husbands. And Celia. 

The book talks about different questions, and we watch how Evelyn and the people around her deal with it (among them LGBTQ+, AIDS, how movie productions were made, how paparazzi are a lot of times hired on purpose, how media only see what they want to see, even if the rest is pretty out there, and the dignity in death).

One of the things that I liked the most was that the book is not just centred on developing Evelyn as a character but how reaching the ending we also know Monique, Harry, Celia, Robert, Connor so deeply. Every character has depth, even those husbands who were just simple wedding arrangments.

My favourite character was Harry, one of Evelyn's husbands, but above all her best friend, and maybe another kind of soulmate. 

And getting to the end we are left with a question: the book we just finished reading is already the biography that Monique wrote? My answer is more on the no side, mainly because it has a lot about Monique and a lot in the end about what happened to her dad and all the reflection about wanting or not wanting to tell mom. But we cannot deny the not-so-subtle self-referentiality of the title of the book that we are reading to the title that Monique is going to give to the biography, which is exactly the same. 

It is a book that breaks the heart and makes us think about the way we look at celebrity culture. Mainly, look at what we don't know. Which is certainly a lot. Evelyn told her story because she felt that she had to, for her and for everyone she loved in her life. And that is the only reason why we know it, not because of the paper, nor because of the movies. From that, we have an idealized Evelyn Hugo. The number of times I read "You're not as I expected" or "This is not how I thought it would be". It is an amazing book. 

I highly recommend it, and cannot wait to read more.
