Midnight Mass, mais uma série de Mike Flanagan, mais uma série de terror que se revela muito mais do que pode parecer à primeira vista. 

A história centra-se à volta do que acontece numa pequena e isolada ilha, Crockett Island, muito centrada na fé católica, e à volta de Riley Flynn e do seu regresso à ilha depois de ter passado tempo na prisão por ter causado um acidente com uma vítima mortal por conduzir bêbedo. 

No ínicio, quase que a história faz parecer que a série se vai centrar toda à volta de Riley, e que o terror se vai centrar numa parte mais psicológica e em como o acidente que causou iria afetar a sua vida dali em diante com um pouco de sobrenatural à mistura. Mas não é bem isso que acontece, pelo menos não nestes termos. 

A série dá-nos a sensação de ser sobre todas as pessoas da ilha, apesar de na realidade não o ser. E ao mesmo tempo parece ser sobre uma ilha que é como uma cápsula do tempo para uma realidade que não avançou, onde todos os dias são iguais, onde sempre viveram as mesmas pessoas.

Uma grande parte da série é a visão específica daquela comunidade em relação à fé católica, em como parece não haver nada mais importante ou nada mais para fazer do que ir à missa. A partir dessa premissa surgem todos os milagres, todo o sobrenatural e levantam-se todas as questões. 

É realmente interessante como há este contraste entre alguém que saiu da ilha e já não é crente, Riley, e a ilha, maior parte dela formada por crentes. Uma das minhas cenas favoritas é quando Riley e Erin falam sobre o que acontece quando se morre, quando vemos estas duas ideias frente a frente que, na realidade, ninguém pode dizer qual delas é a certa. 

Conseguimos ver de forma muito clara o extremismo de Bev, e no que isso vai resultar, não só para ela, mas para toda a ilha. 

O que acontece é que parece que a crença "habitual" começa a dissolver-se, primeiro com Riley, depois com a presença de Sharif e do filho, que introduzem outra crença, depois com a nova visão que Pruitt trás para a ilha, até que, no final, mesmo que ainda exista pessoas que queiram explicar o que acontece pela crença parece que as coisas já estão tão afastadas que se cria uma nova realidade, mas uma realidade que acaba tão rápido que nem permite perceber o que se passou. 

No fundo, parece-me que tudo o que aconteceu a Riley foi para o fazer voltar àquela ilha, e é quase como se ninguém que vivesse lá tivesse realmente a possibilidade de sair. Erin também voltou, mesmo depois de fugir. 

É quase como se nada daquilo existisse, como se a ilha fosse um sonho, como se eles fossem um sonho. E depois o monólogo final de Erin!  

O que, para mim, transforma esta série numa grande história é, de facto, como tudo se desenrola neste final, e como depois de ver o último episódio não só não conseguia parar de pensar no que me estavam a querer dizer, ou no que tudo poderia representar, como também me apercebi que também eu já pensei muitas vezes sobre aqueles temas.

Midnight Mass, another Mike Flanagan series, another horror series that reveals itself to be much more than what it seems at first. 

The story is about what happens on the small and isolated Crockett Island, centred on catholicism, Riley Flynn and his return to the island after being in jail for drunk driving and causing an accident with a casualty.

Initially, it seems that the series will be around Riley and that the horror is a more psychological result of the accident that he caused and how it affected his life from that point on with a bit of a supernatural element. But this is not quite what happens, at least not in these terms. 

We have the feeling that this series is about every person on that island, even though it is actually not. And, at the same time, it seems that it is about an island that is like a time capsule for a reality that didn't move on, where every day is the same, where the same people have always lived. 

A big part of the series is the specific view of that community against catholicism, and how it seems like there is nothing more important to do or no other thing to do than go to the mass. From this premise, the miracles come, followed by the supernatural, and a lot of questions are asked. 

It is interesting to see this contrast between someone that got off the island and is not a believer anymore, Riley, and the island, where the majority are believers. One of my favourite scenes is when Riley and Erin talk about what happens when you die, where we see these two visions confronting each other, and that no one can actually be able to tell which one is the correct vision. 

We can see very clearly Bev's extremism, and what it leads to not only for her but for the whole island.  

It seems like the "usual" belief starts to dissolve, first with Riley, then with the presence of Sharif and his son, that brings another belief system to the island, then with the new vision that Pruitt brings, until at the end where even if there are still people that want to explain what is happening with their belief it seems like things are already too far to a point where a new reality is created, but a reality that ends so fast that it does not allow for an understanding of what was going on. 

In the end, it all seemed to me that what happened to Riley happened in order to bring him back to that island, and it is like no one that lives there could actually get out. Erin also came back, even after running away. 

It is almost as if nothing about that exists, like the island is a dream, like they all were a dream. And then we have Erin's final monologue!

From my point of view, what makes this a great story is in fact how everything comes together in the end, and how after watching the last episode not only I could not stop thinking about what they were telling me or what all that could mean, but also realised that I have thought about those themes a lot of times.
