E cá estamos desta vez para o 2º álbum de estúdio da Billie Eilish!
Vou ser honesta, só ouvi o álbum anterior na sua totalidade há uns meses, isto porque as músicas que passavam na rádio e que eram mais faladas não eram músicas que me cativaram muito. Mais tarde descobri que na realidade ela fez um álbum em que um dos seus objetivos era que todas as pessoas gostássem de pelo menos uma música. Lá está, eu fui finalmente ouvir o álbum e acontece que neste momento mais ou menos metade das músicas são músicas que continuo a ouvir, e não são nada como as "mainstream".
Depois disto, e quando foi anunciado o 2º álbum, claro que fiquei entusiasmada porque desta vez ia ouvi-lo antes de ser bombardeada com opiniões externas. E foi isso que fiz.
Happier Than Ever é então o 2º álbum de estúdio de Billie Eilish com a produção [que não podia faltar] do seu irmão FINNEAS. Numa primeira análise mais geral, é também um álbum muito versátil, com influências de vários estilos diferentes.
Na minha opinião, e depois de o ouvir, este álbum supera o anterior em muitos aspetos. Nota-se que apesar de estilos diferentes em cada música há um tema e vários subtemas que conectam todas as músicas. Consegue ouvir-se também uma maturidade diferente na voz, na produção, na escrita e nos temas em si.
Apesar de adorar a voz e a produção, diria que o que me cativa mais neste álbum são as letras e a narrativa.
Este álbum representa um crescimento pessoal, um tempo em que Billie está realmente a pensar sobre tudo o que passou na indústria, tudo o que passou na vida pessoal, a pensar em si, e a pensar que pode realmente ser feliz, e que não deve sacrificar a sua felicidade por outra pessoa.
Como o álbum tem 16 músicas, pensei que o melhor seria focar-me nas que mais gostei, analisá-las e dizer o que significam para mim. A ordem é a ordem pela qual aparecem no álbum.
Getting older
Nesta música Billie fala essencialmente do pior lado da indústria musical, e pode ser interpretada de várias perspetivas: algum abuso que sofreu de pessoas com quem trabalhou, ou dos paparazzi.
Começa por falar de como entrou numa indústria onde não tinha nenhuma experiência. Ela sabe e vê os lados bons de lá estar mas há alturas em que isso é estragado por ter um "estranho sempre à espera na tua porta" ("a stranger always waiting at your door"), o que a mim parece uma referência aos paparazzi ou até a um stalker. Para ela é estranho porque são aqueles que normalmente dizem ser os maiores fãs que fazem estas coisas.
No refrão vemos mesmo como estas situações podem fazer com que algo que fazia por gosto passe a ser vista como apenas trabalho, como tudo o que queria para o futuro se pode tornar aborrecido e como pode passar a detestar algo que amava.
Mas ela diz que está mais feliz do que nunca e que quer fazer de si a sua prioridade, promete que vai ficar bem apesar do que sofreu. Às vezes o problema de situações de abuso é que só depois de alguns meses ou anos é que as pessoas se apercebem do que realmente aconteceu.
Toda a música é à volta disso mesmo, de estar a crescer, de se aperceber do que aconteceu e partilhar a sua história para que outras pessoas não tenham medo de as partilhar ou não pensarem que estão sozinhas.
É a música perfeita para começar este álbum!
my future
Esta música é uma espécie de reflexão, e foi escrita no início da pandemia em 2020.
Billie reflete sobre o futuro, e diz que está entusiasmada por conhecer essa parte dela. É quase como uma daquelas cartas que escrevemos a nós próprios para ler 10 ou 20 anos depois.
Esta música ocupa um sítio especial em mim porque este é um sentimento que durante muito tempo não tive. Eu quase que tinha medo de crescer. Esta música para mim representa o estar num momento tão bom na vida que até ficamos entusiasmados para saber o que vamos alcançar no futuro, e neste momento sei exatamente o que é sentir isso.
O passado fica no passado, e quem fica lá não vai conhecer o nosso futuro.
Halley's Comet
Esta música liga dois conceitos aparentemente sem ligação, e Billi fá-lo tão bem: utiliza o cometa Halley como metáfora para se estar a apaixonar por alguém.
O cometa Halley só é visível da Terra a cada 75 anos, o que pode ser considerado duas vezes numa vida inteira.
Billie refere que o cometa aparece mais vezes do que ela, o que pode simbolizar o difícil que é para ela encontrar alguém pela qual se apaixone e esteja disponível para "aparecer", ou seja, a admitir o que sente.
Billie canta sobre alguém que conseguiu isso mesmo, que conseguiu fazê-la aparecer e admitir o que sente, e eu adoro toda a metáfora e toda a letra desta música.
Achei curioso esta música ter uma pausa instrumental, é como se fosse uma pausa que ela precisasse para pensar no que estava a dizer e para onde queria levar a história.
Everybody dies
Esta é outra reflexão que eu adoro. Uma reflexão que toda a gente tem e que nunca vai mudar.
É uma música sobre aproveitar a vida enquanto se está vivo. Fala de que mesmo que alguém encontre uma forma para não morrer daqui a 100 anos, porque é que essa pessoa quereria não morrer se iria ficar sozinho a ver toda a gente morrer?
Vai sempre chegar a nossa altura, e não vamos querer ir. Mas toda a gente morre, não vamos estar sozinhos. O que interessa é que vivemos.
O fim desta música é incrível!
Your Power
Esta é uma música sobre relações abusivas, não necessariamente sobre algo que Billie tenha experienciado pessoalmente, mas sobre algo que acontece demasiadas vezes.
Uma das histórias ou perspetivas que Billie constrói é sobre uma relação onde há uma diferença de idades muito grande, quase relação professor-aluna. E pergunta àquele que abusa como é que se atreve a fazê-lo e diz-lhe para tentar não abusar do poder que tem.
Há versos que constroem exatamente aquela ideia de que alguém pode fazer outro sentir-se especial e ao mesmo tempo tê-lo preso numa jaula, ou de como "pensavam" que o outro tinha a sua idade mas também nunca perguntaram.
E termina com "power isn't pain" ("poder não é dor") - quem abusa pode não querer perder o poder que tem sobre o outro mas tudo isso só acontece porque para eles esse poder não é a dor que estão a causar, porque se fosse já não se importava de o perder.
Para mim continua a ser triste que haja tanta gente que se consiga identificar com esta música.
Happier Than Ever
Esta é sem dúvida a minha música favorita da Billie. Eu estou viciada nesta música como estava viciada na Good 4 u da Olivia Rodrigo, e é assim que se sabe que falo a sério.
O início é muito calmo, quase sem produção, mas depois muda para uma segunda parte que se liga tão bem ao início e é completamente fora do que alguma vez a imaginei fazer, num bom sentido.
Ela está a falar para alguém que a fez miserável, e diz que ele se calhar nem sequer se apercebeu disso, muito provavelmente ironicamente. Então ela fala de uma forma simples e clara "When I'm away from you I'm happier than ever. Wish I could explain it better. I wish it wasn't true" ("Quando estou longe de ti estou mais feliz do que alguma vez estive. Gostava de poder explicá-lo melhor. Gostava que não fosse verdade.")
Ela gostou dele de verdade, mas a verdade é que está bem melhor sem ele.
Ela ainda refere “I don’t relate to you cause I’d never treat me this shitty, you made me hate this city” ("Eu não me identifico contigo porque eu nunca me trataria assim, tu fizeste-me detestar esta cidade") - tudo o que ele lhe fazia já era tanto que ela começou a ver a cidade como problema, e a relacioná-la com o que ele lhe fez.
Mal a 2ª parte começou da primeira vez que ouvi a música dei por mim em pé. E na minha cabeça só estava a pensar em todos os artistas que aquilo me estava a fazer lembrar. A referência ao Benz lembrou-me Conan Gray; a forma de cantar Taylor Swift ou Olivia Rodrigo, e a música na sua totalidade fez-me lembrar a I Know the End da Phoebe Bridgers, todos artistas que eu adoro e uma das minhas músicas favoritas de sempre.
Produção, voz, letra, instrumentação, não consigo mesmo escolher o que gostei mais nesta música.

Male Fantasy
Esta é a última faixa do álbum. Muitos dos temas que ela falou ao longo do álbum culminam nesta música como uma conclusão, e na minha opinião é uma música que tem várias interpretações possíveis.
A indústria ainda é dominada por homens brancos e hétero, e tem de se agir de acordo com as suas ideias. As mulheres muitas vezes ainda são postas de parte ou objetificadas. É este o conceito de "male fantasy" ("fantasia do homem") que se lê no título. Há uma certa lente criada pelos homens da indústria do entretenimento que produz e edita tudo o que se vê nos media aos seus olhos.
Na letra, Billie fala de uma separação e de como tenta distinguir se já a ultrapassou ou se está a fingir que detesta essa pessoa. Estes dois conceitos ligam-se para distinguir amor real de amor falso, tal como muitos dos conteúdos [como pornografia, que ela refere na música] que são mostrados online e controlados para retratar esta fantasia.
É complicado de explicar, é como se houvesse um ideal do que se deve sentir quando se acaba com alguém, ou um ideal de como se deve agir ou pensar de acordo com o que é retratado no entretenimento, mas tudo isso é apenas produto da fantasia daqueles que o controlam, e que tentam jogar as cartas a seu favor.

And here we are this time for Billie Eilish's 2nd studio album!
Honestly, I only listened to the whole previous album a few months ago, because the songs that the radios played and the ones that everyone was talking about did not captivate me. Later I discovered that she actually made an album where one of her goals was that everyone liked at least one song. There it is, I finally went and listened to the album and at this moment around half of the songs are songs that I still listen to, and they are not like the "mainstream" ones.
After this, and when the 2nd album was announced, of course, I was excited because this time I would listen to it before being thrown external opinions. And that's what I did.
So, Happier Than Ever is Billie Eilish's 2nd studio album with the production [that could not be missed] from her brother FINNEAS. In a first general analysis, it is very versatile, with many influences from various styles too.
In my opinion, and after listening to it, this album surpasses the previous one in many aspects. We can see that despite the different styles for every song, there is a theme and a lot of subthemes that connect all songs. We can also hear a different maturity in her voice, the production, writing and the themes.
Even though I love the voice and the production, I have to say that what captivates me the most in this album are the lyrics and the storytelling.
This album represents personal growth, a time when Billie is really thinking about everything that she went through in the industry, everything she went through in her personal life, thinking about herself and that she actually can be happy, and that doesn't have to sacrifice her happiness for someone else.
The album has 16 songs, so I thought it would be better for me to focus on the ones that I enjoyed the most, analyse them, and write about what they mean to me. The order is the order in which they appear in the album.
Getting older
In this song, Billie is essentially talking about the worst side of the music industry and can be interpreted from different perspectives: some abuse she suffered from the people she worked with, or from paparazzi.
She starts by talking about her entering an industry where she did not have any experience. She knows and can see the good side of being there, but there are also times where this is ruined by having "a stranger always waiting at your door", being that the paparazzi or even a stalker. For her, it is strange because the ones that do these things are also the ones who claim to be her biggest fans.
In the chorus, we see how these situations can actually turn something she did because she liked into just her job, how everything she wanted for her future to become boring and how she could hate something she used to love.
However, she says that she is happier than ever and that she is her own priority, and promises to be fine despite what she suffered. Sometimes the problem in abuse situations is that the person only realizes what actually happened in months or years.
This song is centred around this, getting older, realizing what happened and sharing the story for other people not be afraid of sharing theirs or not think they're alone.
It is the perfect first song for this album!
my future
This song is some kind of reflection and was written at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
Billie thinks about the future and says that she is excited to meet that part of her. It is like those letters we write for ourselves to read 10 or 20 years after.
This song has a special place in me because this is a feeling that I didn't have for a long time. I almost had fear of growing up. This song represents for me that moment in your life when you are so fine that you are excited to know what we are conquering in the future, and now I know exactly what that feeling is.
The past stays in the past, and those who stay there are not going to meet our future selves.
Halley's Comet
This song connects two apparently not connectable concepts, and Billie does it so well: she uses Halley's comet as a metaphor for falling in love with someone.
Halley's comet is only visible from the Earth every 75 years, which is considered twice in a lifetime.
Billie says that the comet shows up more than her, which can symbolize how difficult it is for her to fall in love with someone and be open to "show up", meaning admitting what she feels.
Billie sings about someone that did that, that was able to make her show up and admit what she feels, and I love this metaphor and all the lyrics in this song.
I found it very interesting for this song to have an instrumental break like it is a break that she needed to think about what she was saying and where she wanted to take the story.
Everybody dies
This one is another reflection that I love. A thought that everyone has and that is never going to change.
It is a song about enjoying life while we're alive. It talks about how even if someone finds a way to not dying in 100 years, why would that person want not to die if he would be alone watching everyone die?
Our time will always come, and we may not want to go. But everybody dies, we are not going to be alone. What matters is that we lived.
The ending in this song is amazing!
Your Power
This is a song about abusive relationships, not necessarily about something Billie has experienced personally, but about something that happens too many times.
One of the stories or perspectives that Billie builds is about a relationship with a big gap in ages, almost like a teacher-student relationship. And she asks the one abusing how dare he do that and tells him not to abuse the power.
Some verses portray exactly the idea of someone being able to make the other feel special and at the same time having that person trapped in a cage, or how someone "thought" the other was their age but never asked.
And it ends with "power isn't pain" - the one abusing might not want to lose their power but that only happens because that power is not the pain they are causing because if it was they would not mind losing it.
For me, it is sad that there are still a lot of people who find this song relatable.
Happier Than Ever
This is my absolute favourite Billie's song. I am addicted to it like I was to Good 4 u, by Olivia Rodrigo and that's how you know that it's serious.
The beginning is very calm, almost with no production, but then it changes to a second part so well connected to the first and that is completely out of what I ever imagined her to do, in a good way.
She is talking to someone that made her miserable and saying that he maybe never even realizes he was doing that, which is highly ironic. So, she is talking simply and clearly "When I'm away from you I'm happier than ever. Wish I could explain it better. I wish it wasn't true".
She did really like him, but in reality, she is better off without him.
She also says “I don’t relate to you cause I’d never treat me this shitty, you made me hate this city” - everything he did to her was so much that she began to see the city as a problem too, and relating it to what he did.
The moment when the 2nd part began when I was listening to the song for the first time I suddenly was standing up. In my head, I was only thinking about all the artists that it was reminding me of. The Benz reference reminded me of Conan Gray; the way she was singing reminded me of Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo, and the music as a whole reminded me of I Know the End by Phoebe Bridgers, all artists I love and one of my favourite songs of all time.
Production, voice, lyrics, instrumentation, I cannot choose what I liked most about this song.

Male Fantasy
This is the last track of the album. A lot of the themes she talked about throughout the album come to this music as a conclusion, and in my opinion, this is a song with several possible interpretations.
The industry is still dominated by straight white men, and you have to act according to their ideas. Women are still objectified or set aside. This is the concept of "male fantasy" that you read in the title. There is a certain lens created by the entertainment industry men that produces and edits everything you see in the media from their point of view.
In the lyrics, Billie talks about a breakup and how she is trying to figure out if she is over it or if she is just pretending to hate that person. These two concepts connect to distinguish real from fake love, as it happens with a lot of the contents [like pornography, which she refers to in the song] that are shown online and controlled to portray this fantasy.
It's hard to explain, it's like there was an idea of what you should feel, how you should act or think when you break up with someone according to what is portrayed in the entertainment, but all that is simply the fantasy of those who control it, and they try to play the cards in their favour.
