Sim, eu sei, estou um bocadinho atrasada. Mas em minha defesa nada melhor do que escrever sobre um álbum, ou neste caso uma música, depois de a ouvir durante quase 1 ano [ um pouco menos porque não o ouvi logo quando saiu, erro meu mais uma vez ].
cardigan é a 2ª faixa de Folklore, o meu álbum favorito de Taylor Swift e, honestamente, o álbum que me fez olhar para a música dela de uma forma diferente, que me fez voltar a ouvir os álbuns mais antigos com uma vontade de os entender e talvez até uma perspetiva diferente da que utilizava antes.
[ É bem possível que este álbum tenha sido o que despertou a minha swiftie interior lol ]
Para escrever todos os meus pensamentos sobre o álbum completo vou precisar de mais um tempo, mas para já posso dizer que o considero diferente de todos os anteriores porque não é necessariamente produto das experiências pessoais do momento em que Taylor o escreveu (pelo menos numa camada mais superficial). Ou seja, este é um álbum baseado em sentimentos reais, mas as histórias não são necessariamente as histórias de Taylor Swift, e são sim baseadas na vida de pessoas à sua volta, de acontecimentos passados ou simplesmente ficção. Por isso é que foi entitulado Folklore, por ser composto por histórias que de uma forma ou de outra se conectam entre si.
E isto é importante porquê? cardigan, como é óbvio, faz parte deste ambiente, mas esta é uma das músicas que pertence a ainda outra subdivisão dentro do álbum. Esta é uma das três perspetivas existentes da história de um triângulo amoroso.
Este triângulo é constituído por Betty (cardigan) e James (betty), que em alguma altura tiveram um relacionamento, e Augustine (august) com quem James teve um caso. Sabemos também que James tem 17 anos, por isso concluimos que em princípio são todos adolescentes.
Sendo cardigan a 2ª música do álbum e betty a 14ª, não conseguimos perceber muito bem exatamente o que aconteceu ouvindo apenas esta primeira perspetiva.
Mesmo assim, na minha opinião, esta música pode não ser apenas a representação desta história ficcional de Betty, mas também alludir a uma parte mais pessoal da relação de Taylor Swift com a música e com os fãs, porque é mais para esse lado que as explicações tendem se tivermos em conta o videoclip.

Os primeiros versos de cardigan fazem uma alusão aos 4 álbuns e respetivas eras de Taylor antes deste.
"Vintage tee, brand new phone" (1) - RED
"High heels on cobblestones" (2) - 1989
"Sequin smile, black lipstick" (3) - Reputation
"Sensual politics" (4) - Lover
E acrescenta "When you are young they assume you know nothing" (5), o que pode ser levado tanto para o lado da perspetiva de Betty sobre a sua relação com James como para a própria carreira de Taylor e a forma como olhavam para ela por ter entrado na indústria tão nova.
No refrão esta última frase é contrariada. Quem está a falar conhecia alguma coisa, e essa coisa era o "tu", no caso de ser James ou os fãs.
E Depois
"And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite" (6)
é uma metáfora tão visual e que funciona tão bem. Conseguimos ver que aquilo que Betty sentiu por James era um sentimento tão forte que ela lhe atribui o crédito de a ter feito sentir-se especial e amada.
No caso da outra perspetiva, a música e o apoio que Taylor sempre teve dos verdadeiros fãs mesmo depois de todo o drama que girava à sua volta foi o que a fez querer continuar e retribuir o apoio que tinha deles.
Agora olhando mais para a interpretação ficcional da música
"A friend to all is a friend to none" (7) representa exatamente alguém que quer agradar a todos e que nunca mostra a sua verdadeira essência - James
"Chase two girls, lose the one" (8) - exatamente o que aconteceu a James
E outra vez "When you are young they assume you know nothing"(5), que mesmo que seja repetido, por causa dos versos anteriores parece que já é mais no subtom de que Betty já sabia o que James andava a fazer mesmo antes de o descobrir propriamente, como um instinto, o que é suportado pelos versos a seguir
"But I knew you, playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends. I knew you, your heartbeat on the High Line, once in twenty lifetimes" (9)
E os versos seguintes representam exatamente a dor e o sentimento de Betty ao ser traída
"To kiss in cars and downtown bars was all we needed" (10)
E outra metáfora super visual: "you drew stars around my scars, but now I'm bleeding" (11)
E nós conseguimos saber qual é o sentimento exato que Taylor quer descrever. Ela descreve-o de uma forma tão verdadeira que me faz pensar em como é que ninguém antes o tinha descrito desta forma.
E depois vêm uma série de metáforas que aludem sempre a esta ideia de dor e de perda e que crescem de intensidade à medida que a música também cresce. E mais, depois disto tudo ficamos com a sensação de que conhecemos inteiramente o lado de Betty, e queremos também ouvir o que James tem a dizer.
No fim, Betty sabia que James se ia arrepender e que queria voltar para ela.
E diz "Cause I knew everything when I was young" (12)
Ele voltou. Agora, Betty já não é uma adolescente, já tem casa, já tem vida própria, e mesmo passado todo este tempo e de tudo o que James lhe fez, ela ainda olha para trás e pensa nele, na relação que tiveram e o que isso lhe trouxe.
Tudo isto remete de volta para o casaco, "um casaco que ainda carrega o odor de perda 20 anos depois", tal como Taylor Swift referiu numa entrevista.
Em relação a toda esta parte, mas vista da outra perspetiva, não vou aprofundar muito mas pode haver uma ou outra referência a tudo o que se passou com a companhia de gravação em que Taylor estava e como isso a afetou e às pessoas à sua volta, o que isso revelou sobre algumas "amizades" e tudo o que ela teve de passar estando há tanto tempo nesta indústria.
Em relação ao videoclip, para mim é a segunda perspetiva que é mais representada. Tudo de bom que Taylor tem por causa da música mas também todos os senãos que lhe trouxe. No final do dia, a música tanto a pode transportar para o mais bonito paraíso, como para a pior das tempestades. Mas é sempre por causa da música que ela consegue ser "salva" e regressar. Mesmo que regresse molhada, está lá o casaco para a envolver, que pode ser a representação de todo o apoio dos fãs (e aliás o casaco utilizado no vídeo é o casaco que foi vendido como merch deste álbum).
Acho importante referir que a letra foi escrita por Taylor e Aaron Dessner, e todos os envolvidos na realização do vídeo estão creditados no fim do mesmo.

Yes, I know that I'm slightly late. However, in my defence, there is nothing better than writing about an album, or in this case a song, after listening to it for almost a year [ a little less because I did not listen to it when it came out, my mistake again ].
cardigan is the 2nd track on Folklore, my favourite Taylor Swift album and, honestly, the album that made me look at her music differently, that made me go back and listen to the older albums with a will to understand them and even with a different perspective from the one I used before.
[ It is possible that this album was the one that woke up my inner swiftie lol ]
To write all my thoughts on the full album I'll need a little more time, but for now, I can say that what makes me think that this one is different is the fact that it is not necessarily a product of Taylor's personal experiences at the moment she wrote it (at least in a more superficial layer). In other words, this album is based on real feelings, but the stories are not necessarily Taylor Swift's stories, but yes based on the life of people around her, past events or simply fiction. That's why it is titled Folklore, for being made of stories that connect between themselves in a way or another.
And why is this important? cardigan is obviously a part of this atmosphere, but it is also one of the songs that are placed in another subdivision inside the album. It is one of three different perspectives in the story of a love triangle.
This love triangle consists of Betty (cardigan) and James (betty), who at some point had a relationship and Augustine (august) with whom James had an affair. We also know that James is 17 years old, so we can imply that in principle they are all teenagers.
Being cardigan the 2nd song on the album and betty the 14th song, we cannot understand exactly what happened listening to just this first perspective.
Even so, in my opinion, this song can be not just a part of this fictional Betty story but also allude to a more personal story about Taylor Swift's relationship with music and fans, because this is more the side that the explanations take when taking the music video into account.
The first verses in cardigan are referencing the 4 previous Taylor Swift albums and eras.
"Vintage tee, brand new phone" - RED

And adds "When you are young they assume you know nothing", which can be Betty's perspective about her relationship with James or even Taylor's career and the way people looked at her for being in the industry so young.
In the chorus, this last sentence is contradicted. The person who is talking knows something, and that something is "you", being James or the fans.
And then
"And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite"
is a visual metaphor that works so well. We can see that what Betty felt for James was so strong that she credits him for making her feel special and loved.
In the other perspective, music and the support that Taylor always had from the true fans even after all the drama was what made her want to continue and do something in return for the support.
Now looking more at the fictional interpretation of the song
"A friend to all is a friend to none" represents exactly someone who wants to please everyone and never shows their true self - James
"Chase two girls, lose the one" - exactly what happened to James
And again "When you are young they assume you know nothing", which even if it is a repetition, because of the previous verses it seems like Betty knew what James was doing before properly discovering it, like an instinct, which is supported by the next verses
"But I knew you, playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends. I knew you, your heartbeat on the High Line, once in twenty lifetimes"
The next verses represent exactly the pain and Betty's feeling by being betrayed
"To kiss in cars and downtown bars was all we needed"
And another ultra visual metaphor: "you drew stars around my scars, but now I'm bleeding"
And we know exactly the feeling that Taylor is describing. She describes it in a so relatable way that makes me think how no one before her had described it like this.
And then a series of metaphors come back to the idea of pain and loss and grow in intensity alongside the music. More, after all this, we feel that we fully understand Betty's side, and now we want to hear what James has to say about it too.
In the end, Betty knew that James would regret what he did and would want to come back to her.
And says "Cause I knew everything when I was young"
He came back. Betty is not a teenager anymore, she has a place, she has a life of her own, and even after all this time and everything James did to her, she still looks back and thinks about him, about their relationship and what it brought to her.
And everything comes back to the cardigan "a cardigan that still bears the scent of loss twenty years later", as Taylor Swift referred to in an interview.
About all this part, but in the other perspective, I am not going deep here but it could have one or two references to everything that went wrong with Taylor's former label and how it affected her and the people around her, what it revealed about some "friendships" and everything that she had to go through for being in this industry for so long.
About the music video, for me, the perspective that is most seen here is this second one. Every good thing that Taylor has because of music, but also the not so good things that it brought her. At the end of the day, music can transport her to the most beautiful paradise and to the worst of the storms. Nevertheless, it is because of music that she manages to be "saved" and comes back. Even if she comes back soaking wet, the cardigan is there for her, which can be the representation of the fans' support (and, by the way, the cardigan used in the music video is the cardigan used as merch for this album).
I think it is important to say that the lyrics were written by Taylor and Aaron Dessner, and everyone involved in making this video was credited in the end.
