THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT

Durante muito tempo tentaram adaptar o livro de Walter Tevis para o ecrã em formato de filme, mas tanto os produtores como o realizador tinham a sensação que faltava algo, e foi assim que surgiu a ideia de o adaptar em formato de mini série depois de muitos anos e de o guião ser muitas vezes rescrito.

A história desta mini série centra-se em Beth, uma rapariga que aos 9 anos ficou órfã e no orfanato viu pela primeira vez um jogo que a iria obcecar, o xadrez. Foi com o zelador do orfanato, Sr. Shaibel, que aprendeu a jogar e foi também ele a primeira pessoa que reconheceu o seu talento para o xadrez. Muito acontece ao longo dos anos, e Beth vai cada vez tendo mais sucesso neste mundo.

O que faz esta história ser interessante não é o facto de ser sobre xadrez, é o facto de ser sobre o custo de ser um génio, de como é que se sobrevive num mundo quando se tem um talento específico que é difícil de entender. Beth, para além de ser a protagonista, é também a sua própria antagonista, pois ela reconhece que o seu talento a faz especial, mas está constantemente preocupada se é louca, pensando constantemente nesta linha entre ser maluca ou genial. Beth é uma pessoa que tem muitos vícios, sendo o dos tranquilizantes o que se prolonga durante mais tempo, tendo começado no orfanato, numa época em que era permitido dar estes medicamentos às crianças, e que ela própria achava ser a fonte do seu talento, que a permitia fazer os jogos na sua cabeça. Ao avançar mais com a sua vida, cada vez vai-se autodestruindo mais, encontrando novos vícios, mas acima de tudo vemos crescer o vício de ganhar, da sensação de gostar de estar no controlo que se reflete perfeitamente na sua obsessão por xadrez.

O xadrez é um jogo difícil de transformar em objeto cinemático, e foi por isso que o realizador e escritor da série, Scott Frank, e o cocriador, Alan Scott, escolheram focar-se principalmente nos rostos dos atores, nas reações dos jogadores e dos espetadores, aliados com o que deve ser mostrado do jogo em si. Tudo isto faz a audiência, mesmo quem não perceba nada de xadrez, sentir o que as personagens sentem, ver quando estão a controlar completamente o jogo, quando sabem que vão perder, quando a reação muda subitamente de confiança para derrota, o que faz com que haja uma proximidade ainda maior com as personagens.

A maior parte da série foi filmada em Berlim, propositadamente porque o realizador queria trabalhar com o designer de produção Uli Hanisch, que conseguiu transformar lugares de Berlim para filmarem as cenas de Los Angeles, Paris e Novo México.

Gambito de Dama é, na minha opinião, uma das melhores séries que estreou este ano na Netflix, uma história que consegue pegar num jogo muito falado e num conceito também muito falado, os prodígios, e utilizá-los para contar a história da pessoa que passa por essa experiência e o que se passou dentro dela.

For a long time, they tried to adapt Walter Tevis’s book for the screen in the movie format, but the producers and the director had the feeling that something was missing, and that was how the idea of adapting it in the format of a miniseries appeared after many years and the script being rewritten a lot of times.

The story of this miniseries is centred in Beth, a girl who became an orphan at 9 and at the orphanage saw for the first time a game that would obsess her, chess. It was with the orphanage’s keeper, Mr Shaibel, that she learned to play, and it was him the first person who recognized her chess talent. A lot happens along the years, and Beth starts having more and more success in this world.

What makes this story so interesting is not the fact that it is about chess, but because it is about the costs of being a genius, about how you can survive in a world when you have a very specific talent that is so hard to understand. Beth, besides being the protagonist, is also her own antagonist, as she recognizes that her talent makes her special, but is constantly worried whether she is crazy, thinking about this fine line between being crazy or genius repeatedly. Beth is a person who has a lot of addictions, being the tranquillizers the one that continues for the longest time, which started at the orphanage in a time that it was not forbidden to give children these medicines, and that she thought was the source of her talent, which allowed her to do the games in her head. As she grows, Beth is more self-destructive and finds new addictions, but above all we see the addiction for winning growing, the feeling of enjoying being in control that reflects perfectly in her obsession for chess.

Chess is a hard game to use as cinematographic object, and that is why the writer and director of the series, Scott Frank, and the co-creator, Alan Scott, chose to focus mainly on the face of the actors, in the reactions of the players and the audience, allied with what needs to be shown of the game itself. All of this makes the viewer, even if they do not understand one thing about chess, feel all that the characters are feeling, see when they are controlling the game, when they know they will lose, when the reaction suddenly from confidence to defeat, which makes us even closer to the characters.

Almost everything was filmed in Berlin, purposely because the director wanted to work with the production designer Uli Hanisch, who was able to transform Berlin’s places so that they could film scenes that were in Los Angeles, Paris, and New Mexico.

The Queen’s Gambit is, in my opinion, one of the best series debuted this year in Netflix, a story that can take a well-spoken game and a well-spoken concept, the prodigies, and use them to tell the story of a person who went through this experience and what was going on inside her.
