A Maldição de Bly Manor é a segunda mini série da Antologia das Maldições, que
começou com A Maldição de Hill House.
É essencialmente uma história sobre fantasmas e ao mesmo
tempo uma história de amor, que se centra à volta do que acontece nesta Mansão
em Bly depois da morte dos pais das duas crianças. É, por isso, sobre uma
família que é criada naquela casa, todas as pessoas que lá vivem vêm de sítios
completamente diferentes e têm a possibilidade de se conhecer uns aos outros à
medida que o tempo passa, que as pessoas mudam, que uns se vão embora e outros
morrem.
A história faz uma ligação bastante interessante entre uma
história de amor e uma história de fantasmas, na medida em que não há realmente
uma linha que as separa, principalmente ao chegar ao final da temporada, sendo
quase indistinguíveis. Tudo isto surge a partir da ideia de que o amor se
apresenta em muitas formas diferentes e que é também algo difícil de separá-lo
do medo, e os fantasmas são as expressões de feridas emocionais que todos
carregam. No fundo, A Maldição de Bly Manor é uma história de amor, mas
em forma de romance gótico, com mistério, emoções muito fortes e que expressa a
parte sombria da natureza humana.
No episódio 8 é onde conseguimos ver as peças todas a
juntar-se. O profundo desgosto, a miséria, a perda e a teimosia obstinada do
coração de Viola tornam-se a gravidade da Mansão de Bly. Ela criou um mundo de
onde os fantasmas não conseguem sair ou seguir em frente. Esta Mulher do Lago
vive numa relação de amor e medo, e com pura força de vontade combina tudo isto
para que ninguém que morra em Bly consiga escapar.
Esta história transmite também a ideia de como o passado e o
presente podem ser ecos um do outro, que momentos não são como dominós, mas sim
como confetti. Essencialmente, a série faz-nos pensar como é que os ecos das
decisões que tomamos na nossa vida podem tocar pessoas centenas de anos mais
tarde, e é isto que o realizador, Mike Flanagan, considera de mais assustador.
Tenho de admitir que fui ver a série com a ideia que era
apenas mais uma série de terror e no momento que a acabei me apercebi que é uma
das melhores séries em termos de personagens, no início temos a sensação e o
preconceito de que todos os fantasmas são maus, mas a partir do momento que
conhecemos a sua história o medo e esta ideia desaparecem totalmente e vemo-nos
neste mundo não muito explorado, mas onde as melhores histórias de terror
surgem, de que quer os fantasmas quer as pessoas têm uma história que vale a
pena ser ouvida.

The Haunting
of Bly Manor is the second miniseries of the Haunting
Anthology, which started with The Haunting of Hill House.
It is
essentially a story about ghosts and at the same time a love story, which is
centred around what happens at the Bly Manor after the death of the parents of
two children. So, it is about a family that is created in that house, and all
of the people that habit Bly Manor come from completely different backgrounds
and get to know each other through friendship and love, and as the time goes
by, people change, and some go away, and others die.
The story
makes a very interesting connection between a love story and a ghost’s story,
in the way that it is almost the same thing, the line between the two is not
there anymore at the end of the season. All of this comes from the idea that love
comes in many shapes and is also hard to separate from fear, and that ghosts
are an expression of emotional wounds that we do carry around. At its heart, The
Haunting of Bly Manor is a love story, but as a gothic romance story, with
mystery, incredibly powerful emotions, and that express the darkness of the human
nature.
It is in episode
8 that we finally can see everything tied together. The heartbreak, and the
misery, and the loss and the stubborn willfulness in Viola’s heart become this
gravity well in all of Bly Manor. She has created a world in which ghosts cannot
move on; the lady of the lake lives at the nexus of love and fear, and by sheer
force of will she combines those things to prevent anybody who dies at Bly from
escaping.
This story
transmits the idea of how the past and present can echo each other, that moments
do not fall in dominos, they fall in confetti, as the director says in
interviews. Essentially, this series makes us think of how these echoes of the decisions
that we make in our lives can touch people hundreds of years later, and that is
something that the director, Mike Flanagan, finds most haunting.
I have to admit
that I went to watch this series thinking that this was just one more horror
series and it was at the moment that I finished it that I realized that this is
one of the best series in terms of the characters, at the beginning we have the
feeling and the prejudice that all ghosts are bad, but as soon as we know their
story the fear and these ideas completely fade away and we see ourselves in this
not very explored world, but the world where the best horror stories come from,
in which as the people, the ghosts also have a story that is worth being heard.
