Lady Bird é um filme escrito e realizado por Greta Gerwig. É essencialmente sobre uma rapariga que dá o nome de “Lady Bird” a si própria como forma de expressar quem é, e que quer sair de Sacramento, onde vive com os pais, para perseguir os seus sonhos.

Lady Bird é uma rapariga que tem uma grande determinação em ser ela própria, que mostra que é normal e aceitável não ter solução para tudo na vida. Ao longo do filme vemos a sua batalha com a mãe, a experiência de diferentes amizades e relações, ir ao baile de finalistas e acima de tudo vemo-la a tentar descobrir quem realmente é.

A principal tese deste filme é o facto de o amor ser realmente atenção, noutras palavras, que o amor é uma forma de atenção e que nem sempre é fácil ou agradável. O facto de Lady Bird descrever Sacramento com tanta atenção para um ensaio mostra um amor que ela tem por este sítio, que mesmo ela só irá perceber que existe depois de partir. O facto de a mãe não parar de lhe prestar atenção pode fazer com que ela se sinta oprimida, mas é assim que a mãe a ama. Tudo isto é utilizado para transmitir a mensagem final do filme: que se deve valorizar o que está à nossa volta e olhar verdadeiramente para os detalhes da nossa vida.

Para além disto, Gerwig e o diretor de fotografia, Sam Levy, decidiram dar ao filme a qualidade visual de uma memória filmando-o em digital. Tudo, desde o vestuário à música e às cores do cenário, faz a audiência relembrar os anos iniciais de 2000.

Sendo um clássico de “entrar na idade adulta”, é um filme que evita clichés apresentando personagens e momentos muito específicos, e a história desenrola-se de duas perspetivas diferentes – a perspetiva da adolescente e a perspetiva do adulto, neste caso a mãe, que está a aprender a libertar e deixar ir.

O filme teve um grande sucesso quando saiu, em 2017, que o levou à nomeação de Melhor Filme e a nomeação de Saoirse Ronan para o óscar de Melhor Atriz nos óscares de 2018, e venceu os Globos de Ouro do mesmo ano nas categorias de Melhor Filme Cómico ou Musical e Saoirse Ronan como Melhor Atriz de Comédia ou Musical, tendo sido nomeado para as categorias de Melhor Argumento de Cinema e Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante em Cinema também nos Globos de Ouro.

O resultado deste filme é essencialmente a história de amor entre uma mãe e uma filha, e o que é mais interessante nesta relação é que por mais antagonista que pareça quando vista de fora, Lady Bird e a mãe têm uma forte ligação, e é assim que, de acordo com Greta Gerwig, é o amor, não muito bonito ou perfeito, mas que perdura.

Lady Bird is a movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig. It is essentially about a girl who gives herself the name “Lady Bird” to express herself, and who wants to get out of Sacramento, where she lives with her parents, to pursue her dreams.

Lady Bird is a girl who has a big determination to be herself, and that shows that it is normal and acceptable to not have the solution for everything in life. Throughout the movie we see her battling with her mom a lot, experimenting different friends and boyfriends, go to prom and try to figure out who she is.

The thesis of this film is that love is really attention, in other words, that love is a form of attention, which is not always easy or pleasant. How she describes Sacramento in her essay for college, with such attention, shows the love for her hometown that she only realizes that exists after she leaves. Her mom pays nonstop attention to her, she can feel oppressed, but it is how her mother loves her. All of this is used to convey the movie’s final message: to value what is around you, to truly sweat the details of your life.

Besides that, Gerwig and the director of photography, Sam Levy, gave the film the visual quality of a memory, meaning it was shot on digital. Everything, from the costumes to the music and the colours of scenarios remind the audience of the passed the early 2000s.

The film is a classic coming-of-age tail, it avoids clichés giving very specific characters and moments, and we see the story unfold from two different perspectives – the perspective of the teen and the perspective of the parent who is learning to let go.

The film had great success when it was out, in 2017, which lead it to the nomination for Best Film and the nomination of Saoirse Ronan for Best Actress in the 2018 Oscars and won the Golden Globes in the same year for Best Comedy or Musical Film and Saoirse Ronan for Best Actress of Comedy or Musical. It was also nominated for the Best Movie Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes.

The result is essentially a mother-daughter love story, and the interesting is how antagonistic this relationship might look from the outside, yet how bonded they are to each other, and it is how love looks like according to Gerwig, not very pretty or perfect but it perseveres.
