O HOMEM DUPLICADO | THE DOUBLE - SARAMAGO

Aqui trago outro artigo sobre um livro de Saramago, mais uma história que não podia deixar de contar e talvez entusiasmar outra pessoa a ir lê-la.

Desta vez, o nome do livro é “O Homem Duplicado”, publicado em 2002 e que conta até hoje com uma adaptação para o cinema, de 2013 (não em português).

A história centra-se em Tertuliano Máximo Afonso, um professor de história que vive num marasmo, num tédio como ele lhe refere, e que entre a escola e casa pouco mais faz. Um dia, na escola, um amigo, o professor de matemática, repara no estado em que ele tem andado e recomenda que ele veja um filme de comédia para relaxar. Apesar de preferir ler, Tertuliano Máximo Afonso vai alugar o filme e planeia vê-lo nessa mesma noite. Vê o filme, até consegue soltar algumas gargalhadas, não reparando em nada de estranho para além da sua passageira distração. A meio da noite, acorda com um barulho vindo da sala e vê que a televisão está ligada. Levanta-se apercebe-se que a televisão está a dar uma cena onde um ator secundário é muito parecido com ele. Pensa que viu mal e volta para trás. Fica atónito, o ator não é muito parecido com ele, aquele ator secundário para quem ele está a olhar é igual a ele.

Depois deste dia, Tertuliano planeia saber quem é aquele seu gémeo de outra mãe, fica completamente focado nesta sua missão, neste acontecimento nunca antes visto ou documentado, tanto que volta à loja onde alugou o primeiro filme e pede para alugar todos os filmes que da mesma produtora, para que possa chegar a algum nome, uma vez que os atores secundários não têm os seus nomes referidos às personagens nos créditos de um filme.

Finalmente, e com outros métodos, acaba por encontrar o nome do homem. Tenho de referir que, apesar de ser divorciado e viver sozinho, Tertuliano Máximo Afonso tem uma relação com uma mulher de nome Maria da Paz, que num passo final usou para chegar ao nome que durante tanto tempo procurou, mas nunca lhe contou o que verdadeiramente se passava relativamente àquele assunto.

Sabendo o nome do ator, facilmente conseguiria o seu número de telefone, pelo que ligou para planear um encontro, que aconteceu apesar da incerteza do seu duplo, mas após este encontro tudo começou a virar para um lado que Tertuliano preferia ter evitado.

Neste livro, Saramago utiliza um tipo de narração que consegue captar a atenção do leitor desde a primeira frase até à última, utilizando muitas vezes um género de conversa dirigida ao leitor e colocando também a conversa entre Tertuliano e o seu Senso Comum, que é como uma pausa na história que deveria dar tempo para que Tertuliano pense no que irá fazer e que maior parte das vezes é ignorado.

O maior tema que identifico neste livro é o da crise de identidade. Parece que Tertuliano Máximo Afonso nunca soube realmente quem era, e quando encontrou o ator ficou obcecado por saber quem o outro seria, vivendo em prol desta busca que vejo como a procura de algo que ele poderia ser, ou algo que ele acha que falta nele próprio, como uma extensão que não conseguiu alcançar da sua pessoa.

Para além de ser um livro de ficção, “O Homem Duplicado”, na segunda parte do romance, passa também a ter um toque de suspense. Saramago consegue ligar muito bem as ações e, mais uma vez, o final é completamente imprevisível e consegue impressionar o leitor.

Here I bring another article about one of Saramago’s books, one more story that I could not pass without telling and maybe excite someone else to go read it.

This time, the book is called “The Double”, published in 2002 and that counts until this day with one movie adaptation, in 2003 (not in Portuguese).

The story is centered in Tertuliano Máximo Afonso, a history teacher who lives in a stagnation, a boredom as he calls it, and that between the school and home doesn’t do much more. One day, in the school, a friend, the math teacher, notices the condition that he has been in and recommends him a comedy movie to relax. Even though Tertuliano Máximo Afonso prefers to read, he goes and rents the movie, which he plans to watch that same night. He watches it, he can even let go some laughs, and doesn’t notice anything strange besides his fleeting distraction. In the middle of the night, he wakes up because of a noise coming from the living room and sees that the tv is on. He gets up and realizes that is playing a scene where a secondary actor is very similar to himself. He thinks that he didn’t see it well and rewinds it. He is astonished, the actor is not similar to him, that secondary actor is equal to him.

After this day, Tertuliano plans to find who that twin from another mother is, he gets completely focused in this mission, in this event that no one has seen or documented before, so much that he went to the store where he rented the first movie and asks to rent all the other movie from the same producer, so he can find a name, because the secondary actors don’t have their names referred to the character in the final credits of a movie.

Finally, and with another methods, he ends up finding the man’s name. I have to say that, even though he was divorced and lived alone, Tertuliano Máximo Afonso has a relationship with a woman named Maria da Paz, who used in a final step to find the name that he was looking for a long time, but never told her what was truly going on.

Knowing the name of the actor, easily was able to get his phone number, and called to plan a meeting, that ended up happening even though his double was unsure, but after this everything started to turn to a way that Tertuliano preferred to avoid.

In this book, Saramago uses a type of narration that is able to captivate the reader’s attention from the first page to the last, using a lot of times a kind of conversation directed to the reader and the conversation between Tertuliano and his Common Sense, that is like a pause in the story that should give Tertuliano time to think about what he would do and that in the majority of the time he ignores.

The biggest theme that I can identify in this book is the identity crisis. It seems like Tertuliano Máximo Afonso never truly knew who he was, and when he found the actor he became obsessed trying to know who the other one would be, living for this search that I see as the search for something that he could have been, or something that he thinks he is missing in himself, like an extension of his person that he wasn’t able to reach.

Besides being a fiction book, “The Double”, in the second part of the novel, it can also be considered to have a touch of suspense. Saramago is able to connect very well the actions and, once more, the ending is completely unpredictable and can impress the reader.
