Há uma grande quantidade de filmes e livros de terror. Podemos
ter terror psicológico, com violência e até sobrenatural, ou uma mistura. Aqui
vou apresentar os contos de dois autores que podem ser considerados como a base
da literatura deste género: Edgar Allan Poe e H.P. Lovecraft.
Um dos autores mais conhecidos por escrever de uma forma
chocante para as pessoas do seu tempo é Edgar Allan Poe, que tem uma série de
contos de terror, perfeitos para quem queira conhecer novas histórias. Poe é um
autor que sofreu muito a incompreensão, a malícia e o desprezo das pessoas à
sua volta, e atualmente é recordado pelas histórias de horror que escreveu com
uma profundidade psicológica inigualável, sendo uma das vozes mais influentes
da literatura.
Dois dos seus contos mais conhecidos são A Pipa de
Amontillado e O gato preto. O primeiro texto é a história de um
homem que recebeu um insulto e, por isso, decide que se tem de vingar daquele
que o proferiu. Começa com um pouco de humor, no início o leitor tem a sensação
de que o que ele pensa fazer não se vai tornar realidade, mas a história
rapidamente cresce a partir dai com uma forte ironia e finalmente chega o
horror. Nunca se percebe bem se o homem sente ou não que o que fez é um ato
certo, se sente remorso ou não, e a forma como vamos descobrindo o seu plano é
sempre surpreendente. O segundo conto é mais assustador que o primeiro, muito
provavelmente por ser mais realista. É a história de um homem que, perante o
abuso de álcool, se transforma numa pessoa completamente contrária à que
costumava ser e comete as maiores atrocidades. É uma história muito perversa,
que envolve um homem num estado de intolerância perante qualquer ação, e que
envolve animais de estimação, a sua mulher, a polícia e um lado espiritual.
Ambos os contos são uma mistura de terror psicológico e de violência, uma vez
que as descrições do que está a acontecer ou do que os homens estão a fazer são
tão diretas que um leitor até pode sentir necessidade de desviar o olhar, como
se estivesse realmente a ver um filme.
H.P. Lovecraft é um autor que faz uma fusão entre o terror
sobrenatural e o género da ficção científica, que teve e continua a ter uma
forte influência em novos escritores. Lovecraft explora essencialmente os temas
da insignificância e transitoriedade da espécie humana diante da vastidão
insondável do cosmos.
Dois contos que representam este seu tema e que são perfeitos
para quem quer começar a ler Lovecraft são O intruso e O Despertar de
Cthulhu. O primeiro conta a história de algo que nunca viu nada para
além do género de catacumbas onde vive, e que passado tanto tempo decide sair.
O problema surge quando encontra um salão com um baile de máscaras e decide
entrar, não esperando a reação das pessoas e vendo-se pela primeira vez ao
espelho. O segundo conto desenrola-se a partir do momento em que o narrador
encontra uns manuscritos do falecido tio, um professor, sobre um culto, e
começa a investigar. No início é um homem completamente racional e cético a
todo o tipo de eventos sobrenaturais, mas à medida que vai ficando mais dentro
desta história começa a mudar para alguém que não só acredita no que começa a
ouvir e ler como também começa a duvidar da morte do tio, e até a pensar que
agora que descobriu a verdade, a morte também deve estar próxima para ele. O
despertar de Cthulhu é um conto com uma extensão maior do que O intruso,
aguentando o suspense durante mais tempo e quase que causando impaciência no
leitor para finalmente descobrir o que acontece. Ambos os contos surpreendem
muito pela criatividade, e a forma como estão escritos eleva o horror que o
autor pretende transmitir ainda mais.
Para quem tiver coragem para os ir ler, apenas relembro o
aviso que aparece na primeira página de ambos os livros:

There are a
huge amount of horror movies and books. We can have psychological horror, with
violence or even supernatural, or a mixture. Here I am going to present the
short stories of two authors that can be considered as the base for this genre’s
literature: Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
One of the
most know author for writing in a chocking way for his time is Edgar Allan Poe,
who has a collection of horror short stories, perfect for those who want to
know new stories. Poe is an author who suffered a lot with incomprehension, malice
and despise of the people around him, and today is remembered for the horror
stories he wrote with an unequaled psychological deepness, being one of the
most influential voices of literature.
Two of his
most known short stories are The Cask of Amontillado and The black
cat. The fist one is the story of a man that received an insult and because
of that decides that he one who said must pay. It starts with a little bit of
humor, in the beginning the reader has the feeling that what he thinks he will
do is not going to happen, but the story quickly grows from that with a strong
irony and finally the horror. We can never understand well whether the man feels
that what he is doing is right or not, whether he feels remorse or not, and the
way that we are discovering his plan is always surprising. The second short
story is scarier that this one, probably because it is even more realistic. It
is the story of a man who, because of alcohol abuse, transforms himself in a
completely different person comparing to the one he used to be and commits the
greatest atrocities. It is a very perverse story, that involves a man in a no
tolerance to any action condition, and which involves pets, his wife, the police,
and a spiritual side. Both stories are a mixture of psychological and violence
horror, as we can see for the very direct descriptions of what the men are doing
or what’s happening, that the reader can feel the need of look away, like when
we watch a movie.

Lovecraft is an author who mixes the supernatural horror with scientific
fiction, who had and continues to have a lot of influence on new writers.
Lovecraft essentially explores the themes of the insignificance and transience
of the human species before the unfathomable vastness of the cosmos.
Two short
stories that represent this theme and that are perfect for anyone who wants to
start reading Lovecraft are The outsider and The call of Cthulhu.
The first tells the story of something who had never seen anything
besides the catacombs where it lives, and after a long time decides that it is
time to go out. The problem comes when he finds a saloon with a masked ball and
decides to go in, not expecting the other people’s reaction and seeing himself
for the first time ever in a mirror. The second one unfolds from a moment in
which the narrator finds some old manuscripts that belonged to his late uncle,
a professor, about a cult, and starts to investigate. In the beginning this man
is a completely rational man, who is skeptic to all things related to the
supernatural, but as the story keeps going and he starts to go into this
investigation, he starts to change to someone who now not only believes in what
hears or reads but also starts to question his uncle’s death, and even thinks
that now that he found all of those things about the truth, death should be
near him. The call of Cthulhu is a short story with a greater extension comparing
to The outsider, that is able to hold the suspense for a long time,
which causes an impatience in the reader to finally discover what happens. Both
short stories are very surprising for their creativity, and the way they are
written elevates the horror that the author wants to transmit even more.
For the ones
with enough courage to go read them, I just remind the warning that was placed
in the first page of both books:
