A história desta saga centra-se essencialmente numa rapariga,
Bella, nova na pequena cidade de Forks, e da relação que estabelece com um
vampiro, Edward, e a sua família, os Cullen. Bella apaixona-se por Edward, um
vampiro com mais de 100 anos de vida com aspeto de 17, que também sente uma
forte atração por ela, no início principalmente por causa do seu cheiro. Ao
começar a dar-se com a família de Edward, os problemas de todo aquele mundo que
ela nunca pensou existir começam a fazer parte também da sua vida.
Stephenie Meyer, autora da saga, considerou-se sempre uma
leitora. Nunca tinha escrito nada pessoal ou feito algum curso de escrita,
formando-se em Literatura Inglesa. Durante o curso teve uma disciplina onde
tinha de apresentar textos próprios, mas mesmo assim nunca levou a escrita de
uma forma séria. A ideia para “Crepúsculo” surgiu num sonho que teve em 2003,
onde um vampiro e uma rapariga estavam a ter uma conversa num prado. A partir
deste momento nunca mais conseguiu tirar a ideia da cabeça e afirma que a
história se desenvolveu quase sozinha. O primeiro livro demorou 3 meses para
ser escrito e foi publicado mais tarde em 2005.
No primeiro livro, a história incide principalmente na descoberta deste “novo” mundo por Bella e na sua primeira e quase mortal interação com vampiros que não sejam os Cullen, mas que a surpreende tanto que, no final, Bella pede a Edward que a transforme, o que ele não está disposto a fazer.
Entre o livro e o filme, considero que o filme conseguiu
transmitir muito bem todos os pontos temáticos apresentados no livro, não
fiquei com a sensação de que faltava alguma coisa. Considero
até que o filme acentuou mais a ideia de Charlie ser um pai protetor e que no
livro sabemos mais profundamente a história da família Cullen.
Depois do primeiro livro publicado e um contrato assinado com
a editora que prometia 3 livros, Meyer escreveu o segundo e este foi publicado
em 2006, com o título de “Lua Nova”.
A história do segundo livro centra-se em, pelas pessoas da
cidade começarem a estranhar o facto de ninguém na família de Edward parecer
envelhecer, eles decidirem que é altura de abandonar a casa onde vivem. Edward
espera até ao último momento para contar a Bella e, para além desta notícia e
para tentar convencê-la a não o procurar, diz que deixou de a amar,
desaparecendo depois de a fazer prometer que não ia cometer riscos disparatados
em troca de que a sua existência fosse apagada da vida dela.
Bella passa por um período de grande depressão, tendo pesadelos e deixando de parte os amigos da escola. Até que descobre que quando comete riscos consegue ouvir a voz dele.
No final desta história, Edward e Bella voltam a juntar-se,
tudo devido a um mal-entendido que envolve Alice (a irmã de Edward que consegue
ler o futuro baseado nas escolhas de cada pessoa) e Jacob, que se transforma em
lobisomem e entra para este mundo que também não conhecia. Bella continua com a
afirmar que quer fazer parte da vida de Edward inteiramente, ou seja, tornar-se
vampira, e submete o seu destino a uma votação dos Cullen.
Uma grande diferença que vi entre este livro com o respetivo
filme foi: no livro, Bella descobre que Jacob é lobisomem depois dele a visitar
e lhe dizer para se lembrar com atenção das histórias que lhe contou no ano
anterior, o que a leva a descobrir. No filme, ela faz uma visita surpresa a
Jacob depois dele se ter afastado, encontra-o de boa saúde e vai confrontar Sam
e os amigos. Quando o faz, Paul perde o controlo, transforma-se em lobisomem à
sua frente e Jacob, para a proteger, transforma-se também. Considero também que
o filme conseguiu fazer justiça a todos os temas do livro.
Num livro que Stephenie Meyer lançou este ano, de nome “Sol
da Meia Noite”, escreve o primeiro livro da saga através do ponto de vista de
Edward. A autora afirma que não decidiu escrever um livro através do seu ponto
de vista, mas sim compilou o que tinha feito ao longo de muitos anos de cenas
que achou que eram muito mais interessantes do ponto de vista do vampiro e que
fez como um exercício de escrita.

The story of
this saga is essentially centered in a girl, Bella, who’s new in the small town
of Forks, and her relationship with a vampire, Edward, and his family, the
Cullens. Bella falls in love with Edward, a vampire with more than 100 years
old that looks like a 17-year-old boy, who also feels a very strong attraction
for her, in the beginning especially because of her sent. As she starts to get
along with Edward’s family, the problems of that world that she never thought
would exist start to be a part of her life too.
Stephenie
Meyer, the author of the saga, always saw herself as a reader. She had never
written anything personal or go to a writing course, graduating with major in
English Literature. In her course she had a subject where she needed to present
her own texts, but even there she never took writing in a very serious way. The
idea for “Twilight” came to her in a dream in 2003, where a vampire and a girl
were having a conversation on a meadow. From that moment she was never able to
take the idea off her head and claims that the story developed almost for
itself. The first book took 3 months to write and was published latter in 2005.
In the first book, the story is mainly about Bella discovering this “new” world and her first and almost mortal interaction with vampires that weren’t the Cullens, but a discovering that surprises her so much that, in the end, she asks Edward to turn her into a vampire, which he is not willing to do.
Between the book and the movie, I think that the movie was able to transmit all the book’s themes very well, I didn’t get the feeling that something was missing. I consider that the movie made Charlie look more like a protective father and that in the book we know more deeply the Cullens’ story.
After the
release of the first book and a signed contract that promised 3 books to the
editor, Meyer wrote the second and it was published in 2006, with the title
“New Moon”.
The story of
the second book is centered in, because the town’s people start to wonder why
no one in Edward’s family seem to grow old, they decide that it’s time to
abandon the house where they are living. Edward waits until the last minute to
tell Bella and, besides that and to try to convince her not to look for him, he
says that he stopped loving her, disappearing after making her promise that she
wouldn’t commit unreasonable risks in exchange of his existence being deleted
from her life.
Bella goes through a big depression, having nightmares and leaving her friends from school. Until one day she discovers that when she commits risks, she can hear his voice.
In the end of
this story, Edward and Bella come back together, all because of a misunderstanding
that involves Alice (Edward’s sister that can read the future based on the
choices of a person) and Jacob, that transforms into a werewolf and comes into
this world that he himself didn’t know either. Bella continues saying that she
wants to be a part of Edward’s life fully, meaning that se wants to become a
vampire, and submits her faith to a voting by the Cullens.
A big
difference that I saw in this book comparing to the movie was: in the book, Bella
discovers that Jacob is a werewolf after he visits and tells her to remember
with attention the stories that he told her in the past year, which makes her discover.
In the movie, she makes a surprise visit to Jacob after he kept away, she finds
him in good health and confronts Sam and his friends. When she does that, Paul
loses control and turns into a werewolf in front of her and Jacob, to protect
her, turns himself too. I consider that this movie made justice to all the book’s
themes too.
In a book that
Stephenie Meyer published this year, with the title “Midnight Sun”, she writes
the first saga’s book through Edward’s point of view. The author claims that
she didn’t decide to write a book through his point of view, but that she
compiled all that she had done over the years of scenes that she thought that
were much more interesting from the vampire’s point of view and that she had
done as a writing exercise.
