Sempre gostei muito de ir ao cinema, nunca me importava muito
com o filme que ia ver porque na sua maioria gostava de todos e queria vê-los a
todos no grande ecrã. Contudo, um dos grupos que ficava sempre para o fim da
minha lista eram os da Marvel, principalmente os de super-heróis. Para além de
não serem bem o meu género, achava sempre que, para se ver qualquer filme novo
da Marvel, tinha de se ter visto todos os anteriores, ou então não conseguiria
compreender esse. Desde o momento em que foi anunciada a estreia de “Joker” que
o quis ir ver, mas nunca com muitas expetativas. Fui vê-lo, e saí da sala de
cinema completamente surpreendida.
Para além de o filme não ser sobre um super-herói, mas sim
sobre um vilão, dá ao espetador uma perspetiva única e quase que uma nova
história sobre o Joker, o que era a sua vida antes de se tornar no vilão pelo
qual é conhecido, tudo o que o levou a seguir esse caminho, o que faz uma
pessoa ser daquela forma, e mais importante, reconhecer a humanidade da personagem.
O interessante neste filme é que é realizado do ponto de vista da personagem
principal, mostrando tanto a realidade do que ele passou como as suas ilusões,
o que o torna ambíguo no sentido em que não sabemos até que ponto devemos
considerar a veracidade da história.
A história centra-se, então, na vida de um comediante
fracassado, Arthur Fleck, que tem uma doença mental causada por abusos que
sofreu quando era criança, que o faz rir descontroladamente quando se sente
assustado ou nervoso. Vive com a mãe num apartamento minúsculo e, no início do
filme, trabalha numa agência de entretenimento que aluga palhaços para diversos
tipos de trabalho. Logo desde as primeiras cenas do filme consegue perceber-se
o ambiente onde ele vive, a discriminação e o sofrimento que sente, tal como o
ambiente vivido naquela cidade.
“Joker” é um suspense psicológico. Foi lançado em 2019,
realizado por Todd Phillips e escrito pelo realizador em conjunto com Scott
Silver. Joaquin Phoenix esteve desde o início na mente de Phillips como o ator
que representaria Joker, e a sua participação neste filme levou-o a ganhar o
Óscar de Melhor Ator em 2020.
O filme consegue transmitir de uma forma igualmente boa e “de
abrir os olhos” aquilo pelo qual Arthur passou. Viveu toda a sua vida atrás de
uma máscara, a esconder aquilo que realmente é, o que é irónico porque é no fim
que utiliza fisicamente uma máscara, mas é aí que se sente mais livre. Há uma
cena que marca o primeiro passo para o surgimento da sua verdadeira identidade,
onde ele mata três homens no metro que se metem com ele por causa da sua
condição, no dia em que foi despedido. A partir daí o seu carácter vai
crescendo e evoluindo, vai-se descobrindo a si próprio e ao que não sabia sobre
o seu passado, é tomado como exemplo para manifestações em toda a cidade e
quando por fim é gozado pelo apresentador de televisão e comediante que mais
admira, decide mostrar quem é e porque não o devem subestimar.
Foi um dos melhores filmes que já vi, e o que escrevi não
está perto de lhe fazer justiça, aconselho mesmo que o vejam.

I always
loved going to the movie theatre, and never minded a lot with which movie I was
going to see because I liked most of them and wanted to see all in the big
screen. However, a group that kept staying in the end of my list was the Marvel
ones, mostly the ones about superheroes. Beyond not being my type of movie, I
always thought that to be able to see the new Marvel movie and understand it
all I needed to have seen all the previous movies. Since the moment that the
release of “Joker” was confirmed I wanted to see it, but never with a lot of
expectations. So, I went and saw it, and I left the movie theatre completely
surprised.
Beyond the
movie not being about a superhero, but a villain, it gives the viewer an unique
perspective and almost a new story about the Joker, what was his life before
becoming that well-known villain, what made him go through that path, what
makes a person be that way, and the most important, recognizing the character’s
humanity. The interesting part is that the movie is made from the main
character’s point of view, showing both the reality and the illusions of his
life, which makes it ambiguous in the way that we don’t know to what extent we
should consider the veracity of the story.
The story is,
then, centered in the life of a failed comedian, Arthur Fleck, who has a mental
illness caused by childhood abuses that makes him laugh without control when
he’s scared or nervous. He lives with his mother in a tiny apartment and, in
the beginning, he works for a entertainment agency that rents clowns to
different types of jobs. Since the very first scenes we can see the environment
in which he lives, the discrimination and the suffering he is feeling, and the
city’s ambient.
“Joker” is a
psychological suspense. It was released in 2019, directed by Todd Philips and
written by the director and Scott Silver. Joaquin Phoenix had been in Philips’s
mind to be the actor who would play Joker ever since the beginning, and his
participation in the movie lead him to win Best Actor at 2020 Oscars.
The movie can
transmit in an equally good and “eye opening” way what Arthur had been through.
He lived all his life behind a mask, hiding what he really is, which is ironic
because it is at the end that he physically wears a mask but feels freer than
ever. There is a scene that signs the first step to the rising of his true
identity, where he kills three men in the subway that were making fun of him
because of his condition, in the day that he was fired. From there, his
character begins to grow and develop, he starts to find himself and his unknown
past, is taken by example for manifestations in all over the city, and when the
comedian and host of his favorite TV show makes fun of him, he decides to show
everyone who he is and why they shouldn’t underestimate him.
It is one of
the best movies I have ever seen, and what I wrote is not close to doing it
justice, I really recommend seeing it.
