A primeira vez que tive contacto com a ideia de Veronica Roth foi no filme “Convergente” (em 2016), o último da série. Nunca tinha visto nenhum dos outros filmes ou lido nenhum dos livros dela, pelo que o que me chamou mais a atenção para o ir ver foi o facto de a protagonista ser a Shailene Woodley e de ser o filme mais falado no momento. Claro que quando saí da sala de cinema tinha uma ideia, mas não percebia maior parte do filme, por isso, decidi pegar no primeiro livro da série, que já tinha numa prateleira em casa, e lê-lo.
“Divergente” é o primeiro da trilogia de Veronica Roth, um
livro que surgiu da escolha que transformou a sua vida: escrevê-lo em vez de
fazer os trabalhos para a faculdade. Foi eleito o melhor livro de 2011 e
ajudou-a a ser considerada a melhor autora pelo GoodReads Choice Awards em
2012. A adaptação para cinema foi lançada em 2014.
É um livro de ficção que se passa num Chicago
pós-apocalíptico, a única cidade que acreditam ter sobrevivido à guerra. Os fundadores
criaram fações para manter a ordem e assegurar a paz. Os Abnegados, a fação
daqueles que acreditam no altruísmo acima de tudo, os Eruditos, que apoiam a
razão e o saber, os Cordiais, que preferem a simpatia e paz, os Cândidos, que
defendem a honestidade acima de tudo, e os Intrépidos, que valorizam a coragem.
Beatris é uma rapariga de 16 anos nascida nos Abnegados que
um dia antes de escolher a fação onde passará o resto da vida descobre que é
Divergente, ou seja, que a sua mente não se encaixa em apenas uma fação. Mesmo
assim, teria de escolher uma das fações e esconder aquilo que acabara de
descobrir sobre ela própria, para seu próprio bem. Acaba por escolher os
Intrépidos, que sempre admirou desde pequena, e luta para conseguir um lugar e para
se encaixar.
Para além de toda a parte de ação e aventura a história tem
também um lado de romance quando Tris se apaixona pelo treinador que todos
conhecem pelo nome de Four (Quatro).
Apesar de ser um livro de ficção num futuro pós-apocalíptico, senti que me conseguia identificar com a história de Tris, e mais importante que conseguia ver a nossa sociedade na cidade onde ela vive. A pressão para decidir a nossa profissão quando ainda nem ¼ da nossa vida vivemos, o facto de não ser socialmente aceite ser várias coisas, mudar de opinião, aprender enquanto vivemos, saber um pouco de tudo e muito sobre aquilo que nos realmente interessa.
Só alguns anos depois de ter lido o livro é que fui ver o
filme. Consegui observar de imediato algumas diferenças, como o cenário e a
construção do teste de aptidão de Tris, ser a Christina a apanhar a bandeira e
não Tris e o teste final dos Intrépidos ser visto num ecrã gigante e não apenas
pelos líderes. Tive também a sensação que a história entre Tris e Four se
desenvolveu mais rapidamente e abertamente no livro do que no filme, que sempre
caracterizou a sua personagem como muito fechada.
Na altura já não me lembrava muito dos pormenores, mas
viciou-me completamente e até hoje é um dos filmes que consigo ver vezes sem
conta e não me fartar. Eventualmente
acabei por reler o livro e comparar mais atentamente os pormenores com o filme,
vendo as diferenças e percebendo as mudanças de falas e atitudes para que
conseguissem transmitir melhor a essência da história.
Agora, consigo fazer uma distinção entre os dois, vendo-os
quase como duas histórias diferentes com a mesma raiz.

The first time I ever had contact with Veronica Roth’s ideal
was in the movie “Allegiant” (in 2016), the last one of the series. I never had
seen the other movies or read any of the books, so what drew my attention to
see it was the fact that Shailene Woodley was starring and that was the most
talked book of that time. Of course that when I got out of the movie theatre I
had an idea but didn’t understand the majority of it, so I decided to grab the
first book of the series, which I already had on a shelf at home, and read it.
“Divergent” is the first of the trilogy by Veronica Roth, a
book that emerged out of the choice that transformed her life: write it instead
of doing the college homeworks. It was elected the best book of 2011 and helped
her winning best author for GoodReads Choice Awards in 2012. The movie
adaptation was launched in 2014.
It is a fiction book on a post-apocalyptic Chicago, the only city that they believe survived the war. The founders created factions to maintain the order and assure the peace. Abnegation, the faction of the ones that believe in altruism above everything else, Erudite, the ones that suport the reason and knowledge, Amity, who prefer sympaty and peace, Candor, who defend the honesty above anything else, and Dauntless, who value the courage.
Beatris is a 16 year old girl born in Abnegation that one day
before choosing the faction that would be her home for the rest of her life,
discovers that is a Divergent, in other words, discovers that her mind doesn’t
fit in only one faction. Nevertheless, she has to choose one of them and hide
what she just found out about herself for her own good. She ends up choosing
Dauntless, who has admired since she was a little girl, and fights to fit in.
Besides the action and adventure parts the history has a
romance side too when Tris falls in love with the coach that everyone knows for
the name Four.
Even though it is a fiction book on a post-apocalyptic future, I felt like I could see myself as Tris, and the most importante that I could see our society identified in the city where she lives. The pression to decide our job even if we haven’t even lived ¼ of our life, the fact that it is not socially right to be multiple things, change our opinion, learn while we live, knowing a little about everything and a lot about what is really importante to us.
I only saw the movie a few years after I read the book. I
could immediatly notice some diferences, like the scenario and construction of
Tris’s aptitude test, Christina being the one that caches the flag instead of
Tris and the Dauntless final test being seen in a giant screen and not just for
the leaders. Also, I had the feeling that the history between Tris and Four
developed quicker and more openly in the book than in the movie, where his
character was always marked as very sealed.
At the time I didn’t remember a lot of the details, but I got
completely addicted and until today it is one of the movies that I can watch
over and over again and not get sick of it. Eventually I ended up rereading the
book and comparing more closely the details with the movie, seeing the
diferences and understanding the changes in lines and even attitudes so that
they could transmit better the history.
Now I can distinguish both the book and the movie, seeing
them almost as two diferent stories with the same roots.
