No primeiro ano do secundário tive uma disciplina prática na
qual o professor decidiu que iriamos tocar durante um período apenas bandas
sonoras de filmes. Uma dessas foi a do “Cinema Paradiso”, uma das músicas mais
bonitas que já toquei. O meu professor falava sempre dos filmes antes de nos
entregar as partituras e sempre tive vontade de ver o filme a partir da primeira aula. Nesse ano houve uma campanha de recuperação de filmes antigos
nos cinemas UCI do El Corte Inglês e o “Cinema Paradiso” foi um deles. Foi a
primeira vez que o vi e ainda bem que consegui vê-lo no grande ecrã. A partir
desse momento é um dos filmes que junta a minha vida na música com a curiosidade
que sempre tive em relação ao cinema.
O filme é a história de um menino chamado Salvatore, Toto,
que se apaixona pelo cinema através da amizade que constrói com o operador do
cinema da sua terra, Alfredo. Quando chega a casa, já adulto e reconhecido
cineasta, recebe a notícia de que Alfredo faleceu, começando a relembrar-se dos
momentos que passava a ajudá-lo no Cinema Paradiso e de tudo o que
Alfredo lhe ensinou.
Para além das aventuras de Toto no cinema observa-se muito o
controlo que a igreja exercia naquela época.
“Cinema Paradiso” é um filme italiano lançado em 1988,
realizado por Giuseppe Tornatore e com banda sonora de Ennio Morricone, um
compositor que é reconhecido na área da música por mais de 450 obras para
cinema e televisão e 100 obras clássicas. O filme foi vencedor do óscar de melhor filme de língua estrangeira em 1990.
Morricone nasceu a 10 de novembro de 1928 e faleceu com 91
anos no dia 6 de julho de 2020. Começou a compor quando tinha apenas 6 anos. No
início da sua carreira como compositor chegou a escrever para artistas de jazz
e pop, rádio e televisão. Mais tarde, começou a escrever e a fazer arranjos
utilizando pseudónimos. Foi nomeado para os Óscars pelas composições de “Days
of Heaven” (1979), “The Mission” (1986), “The Untouchables” (1987), “Bugsy”
(1991), “Malèna” (2000) e “The Hateful Eight” (2016), este último o único óscar
que ganhou.
É também Ennio Morricone o compositor do tema “Amor a
Portugal” (em parceria com C. Vargas e interpretação de Dulce Pontes), uma
música dedicada ao povo português. Diz-se que Dulce Pontes estaria a fazer uma
gravação num estúdio estrangeiro e deu-se o acaso de Morricone passar, ouvir a
sua voz e decidir nesse momento que tinha de escrever uma peça para ela
interpretar.
No dia em que soube da sua morte estava a passear numa zona
sem rede e esta foi das únicas coisas que deu para ouvir no rádio. Lembro-me de
demorar pouco tempo a perceber que era mesmo ele e de pensar “vou-me
passar se foi o vírus”, o que não foi o caso. Mesmo assim, fiquei feliz por
Ennio Morricone ter conseguido ser reconhecido no seu tempo.
Foi graças ao meu professor que conheci o trabalho de
Morricone, e agradeço-lhe muito.

In the first year of high school I had a subject in which the
teacher decided that we would only play film music for the one term. One of
those was from “Cinema Paradiso”, one of the most beautiful themes I ever
played. My teacher always talked about the films before we received the music
score and I always wanted to see the film since the first class. In that same
year there was an old film recovery campaign in the movie theatre of El Corte
Inglês and “Ciname Paradiso” was one of them. It was the first time I ever saw
the movie and I’m glad that I could see it on the big screen. After that moment
it is one of my favourite films, that joins my life with music and the
curiosity I always had for cinema.
The movie is the story of a boy named Salvatore, Toto, that
falls in love with cinema because of a friendship that he builds with the cinema
operator of his village, Alfredo. When he gets home, an adult and well-known
film-maker, receives the news that Alfredo died, and starts to remember the
moments that spent helping him at the Cinema Paradiso and everything
that Alfredo taught him.
Besides Toto’s adventures, we can also see the control that
the church practiced at that time.
“Cinema Paradiso” is an italian movie released in 1988,
directed by Giuseppe Tornatore and with the music score by Ennio Morricone, a
composer that is known in the music field for more than 450 compositions for
television and films and 100 classical compositions. The movie won the óscar for best movie of foreign language in 1990.
Morricone was born in November 10th, 1928, and died at the
age of 91, at July 6th, 2020. He started composing at the age of 6. In the
beginning of his career as a composer he wrote for jazz and pop artists, radio
and television. Later, he started composing and doing arrangements with
pseudonyms. He was nominated for the Oscars for his compositions of “Days of
Heaven” (1979), “The Mission” (1986), “The Untouchables” (1987), “Bugsy”
(1991), “Malèna” (2000) e “The Hateful Eight” (2016), this last one the only
Oscar that he won.
It’s also Ennio Morricone the composer of the theme “Amor a
Portugal” (in partnership with C. Vargas and interpretation of Dulce Pontes), a
music dedicated to the portuguese people. It is said that Dulce Pontes was
recording in a foreign studio and by chance Ennio Morricone passed by, heard
her voice and decided that wanted to write a theme for her.
In the day that I knew that he died I was walking through a
no network place and this was one of the only news that I was able to hear on
the radio. I remember taking very little time to realise that it was really him
and thinking “I will freak out if it was from the virus”, which was not the case.
Even so, I was happy that Ennio Morricone was able to be recognized in his own
time.
It was thanks to my teacher that I met Morricone’s work, and I
am very thankful to him for that.
