Comprei o livro há dois anos. Comecei a ler, mas foi um livro
que não me cativou muito e acabei por o deixar de lado. Tinha uma lista enorme
de livros que queria ler no verão antes das aulas começarem.
Sigo e admiro há muito tempo o trabalho de Lili Reinhart,
tendo-a descoberto ao ver a série Riverdale, onde interpreta Betty Cooper. Quando
anunciou que para além de ser protagonista no filme baseado neste livro era
também produtora executiva, um trabalho que desempenhava pela primeira vez,
voltei a pegar nele.
Acabei de o ler 1 mês antes de o filme sair. No fim de contas
acabei por gostar. Pensava que seria mais uma história ao estilo de John Green,
Nicholas Sparks ou outra daquelas histórias que fazem os jovens pensar que o
amor é simples e acaba sempre bem. Mas não. É a história dura de um amor
adolescente que não funciona.
Grace Town é uma rapariga que sofreu uma enorme perda, a do
seu namorado e melhor amigo de infância, Dom, por causa de um acidente de
automóvel onde também ela ia e do qual saiu gravemente ferida. Henry Page é um
rapaz comum no último ano de secundário que nunca namorou e que sabe que quer
ser escritor. No primeiro dia de aulas encontra-se com Grace, uma rapariga
misteriosa transferida de outra escola para o último ano de secundário que
veste roupas de rapaz, quando o diretor do jornal da escola os convida a ambos
para seres editores-chefes. Grace afirma que apenas aceitava o cargo de
assistente do editor-chefe e que não escreveria nada, apenas ajudava na edição.
A amizade entre Henry e Grace desenvolveu-se a partir deste dia, quando Henry
perdeu o autocarro e caminhou na mesma direção que Grace para casa. Quando
chegaram à casa dela, ela entregou-lhe as chaves do seu carro e disse que lhe
dava boleia, mas que ele conduzia. E assim se tornou uma rotina. Mas o que
intrigava mais Henry era para onde ela ia depois de o deixar em casa e quem era
o homem que ia buscar o seu carro.
Grace e Henry acabaram por se envolver, mas nota-se que sendo
este o primeiro amor de Henry ele estava realmente apaixonado por ela, mas ela
ainda se estava a tentar adaptar à sua nova realidade, onde quer ficar melhor,
mas ainda não se sente pronta para ultrapassar a perda que sofreu.
É, finalmente, uma história que representa o que é o amor
jovem, uma história verdadeira que consegue tocar em muitos dos temas
predominantes na realidade de ter esta idade, como a procura de quem somos, o
limbo entre a adolescência e a idade adulta, tomar decisões por nós,
relacionamentos, suicídio, perdas e recuperações. Acredito que há espaço
suficiente para que qualquer pessoa que veja o filme ou leia o livro se
identifique com algum dos momentos.
O filme foi lançado a 21 de Agosto de 2020 e, sendo uma produção da Amazon, está disponível para qualquer país na Amazon Prime Video. Parece que estou a fazer uma promoção a esta plataforma, mas acreditem que é um filme que nos põe realmente a pensar, a olhar para nós, que vale a pena ver. O filme é uma adaptação do livro de Krystal Sutherland, “A química dos nossos corações”, e consegue transmitir todos os seus temas de uma forma bastante parecida e conexa.

I bought the book two years ago. I started reading, but the
book didn’t catch my attention and I ended up leaving it aside. I had a huge
book list that I wanted to read before summer vacation was over.
I follow and admire Lili Reinhart’s work for a long time,
having discovered her because of the series Riverdale, where she plays Betty
Cooper. When she anounced that besides being the main character in the movie
she was also the executive producer, a job she was doing for the first time, I
grabbed the book again.
I finished reading the book 1 month before the movie was
released. After all I ended up liking it. I thought that it would be one more
John Green or Nicholas Sparks’s type, or another story that makes young people
think that love is simple and always ends up in a good way. But it is not the
case. It is the story of a teenager love that didn’t work out.
Grace Town is a girl that suffered a huge loss of his
boyfriend and childhood best friend, Dom, because of a car crash, where she was
too and from which she got out seriously injured. Henry Page is a common boy in
his last high school year that never dated anyone and know that wants to be a
writer. In the first day of school he meets Grace, a mysterious girl
transfered from another school for the last year of high school that wears
boy’s clothes, when the principal asks them to be cheef-editors on the school
paper. Grace says that she only accepts being assistent cheef-editor and that
she wouldn’t write, just help editing. Their friendship developed from that day
when Henry lost the bus and walked in the same direction as Grace to home. When
they arrived at her house she lended him her keys and told him that she could
give him a ride, but he had to drive. And that became a routine. But what
intrigued Henry the most was where she goes after driving him home and who was
the man that picked up her car.
Grace and Henry ended up in a relationship, but it is clear
that being Henry’s first love he was really in love with her, but she was still
trying to adapt to her new reality, where she wants to get better, but she is
still not ready to get over her loss.
It is, finally, a story that represents what is young love, a
true story that is capable of touching a lot of predominant themes of having
this age, like the seeking of who you are, the limbo between being a teenager and
an adult, making decisions for yourself, relationships, suicide, losses and
recoveries. I believe that it has plenty of room for anyone to watch it and
feel connected with at least one moment.
The movie was released in August 21st 2020 and, being an
Amazon production, it is available for streaming at Amazon Prime Video. It
seems like I’m promoting this platform, but believe me when I say that it is a
movie that makes us really think, look at ourselves, that is worth watching.
The movie is an adaptation of Kystal Sutherland’s book “Our Chemical Hearts”,
and it can pass on all its themes in a very alike and conected way.
