F.R.I.E.N.D.S - Atrás das câmaras | Behind the cameras

É certo afirmar que qualquer pessoa já ouviu falar de FRIENDS, mesmo que só uma pequena referência ao seu nome. A verdade é: são raras as pessoas que não a conhecem, ou às suas personagens, atores, cenários… Mas será que o número se mantém quanto às pessoas que sabem a sua origem e os caminhos que tiveram de ser atravessados por trás das câmaras?

A primeira emissão da série foi a 22 de setembro de 1994, na NBC, e tinha como protagonistas seis nova-iorquinos de Manhattan pertencentes à Geração X, um grupo demográfico com que a maioria dos americanos não se identificaria, o que poderia com toda a facilidade ter causado o seu fracasso. Atualmente, é quase impossível pensar que não tivesse triunfado, mas a verdade é que a incerteza sobre o seu sucesso estava clara para os criadores.

Marta Kauffman e David Crane conheceram-se na Universidade enquanto estudavam encenação de teatro, participando em diversos projetos, principalmente como escritores, mesmo fora dos estudos. Já trabalhavam há algum tempo juntos quando conheceram a agente televisiva Nancy Josephson, que lhes perguntou se alguma vez tinham pensado em escrever para televisão, ao qual Kauffman e Crane responderam que gostariam de tentar. FRIENDS não foi o primeiro piloto que desenvolveram. Quando tiveram a ideia para a série basearam-se na época das suas vidas em que não havia uma carreira estável, nem uma casa, onde se apoiavam numa família improvisada de amigos e sentiam o sabor inicial daquilo que é a vida adulta.

Mas nem toda a jornada da sua criação foi pacífica. Houve pedidos e negociações de aumentos por parte dos atores com os produtores da série, que quase causaram o fim da sua emissão, houve acusações de machismo e homofobia na sala de escritores e até o facto de terem de adaptar a história quando alguma das atrizes engravidava.

Em 10 anos a série cresceu de uma forma inesperada, quer para os seus criadores quer para o público, e certamente tocou e influenciou cada pessoa que a viu. Centenas de mulheres cortaram o cabelo de forma igual à Rachel, outros tantos homens cortaram o cabelo de forma a ficarem parecidos com o Joey, as piadas memoráveis do Chandler, as obsessões esquisitas da Monica, os devaneios inconscientes da Phoebe, houve celebridades convidadas, episódios especiais de ação de graças e natal, animais, passaram pelo 11 de setembro e alegraram momentos internacionalmente.

FRIENDS foi emitida até 2004, com 10 temporadas e 236 episódios no total, e continua a ser vista e revista todos os dias. Agora há a promessa de uma reunião para um episódio especial que irá ser emitido pela HBO e que espera a maior aderência de público alguma vez vista.

A primeira vez que tive contacto com a série foi na primavera de 2019, um momento da minha vida que era constituído principalmente pela ansiedade do último ano do secundário e da passagem para a vida de estudante universitário. Ainda não sabia aquilo que queria fazer e sentia a pressão para decidir. Até ao dia de hoje continuo a recorrer aos FRIENDS como um escape, uma lembrança da felicidade apesar da passagem do tempo, uma fuga e ao mesmo tempo um abrir de olhos para a realidade que foi e continua a ser a transformação, qualquer que seja.

Apesar de tudo, aquela era a vida que toda a gente gostaria de ter ou de ter tido.

It is right to say that everyone have already heard about FRIENDS, even just a tiny reference to its name. The truth is: are rare the people who don’t know its name, or the characters, actors, scenarios… But does the number remain as to the people who know its origin and the paths that had to be crossed behind the cameras?

The first emission of the serie was on september 22nd 1994, on NBC, and had starring six new-yorkers from Manhattan belonging to the X Generation, a demografic group with which the majority of the americans would not identify themselves, which could easily cause its failure. Currently, it’s almost impossible to think that it wouldn’t triumph, but the truth is that the uncertainty about its success was clear for the creators.

 Marta Kauffman and David Crane met in University while studying theatre staging, taking part in a lot of projects, mainly as writers, even after graduating. They were working together for a while when the television agent Nancy Josephson met them, asking if they had ever consider writing for television, for which Kauffman and Crane answered that they would be willing to try. FRIENDS wasn’t their first pilot. The ideia for the serie was based on the time of their life where there wasn’t a stable work, nor a house, where they would lean on an improvised family of friends and were feeling the initial flavour of what the adult life is.

But not all the journey of its criation was pacific. There were requests and negotiations of raisings for the actors with the producers that almost ended the emission, there were accusations of machism and homophobia in the writers’ room and even the fact that they would have to change the history because one of the actresses got pregnant.

In 10 years the serie had grow in an unespected way, whether for its creators or for the audience, and certainly touched and influenced each one that saw it. Hundreds of women cut their hair like Rachel, another count of men cut their hair to be just like Joey, Chandler’s memorable jokes, Monica’s weird obsessions, Phoebe’s uncouncious daydreams, there were celebrity guests, thanks giving and Christmas special episodes, pets, they went through 9/11 and rejoiced moments internationally.

FRIENDS was emited until 2004, with 10 seasons and 236 episodes in total, and continues to be seen and reseen every day. Now there is the promise of a special reunion episode that will be streamed by HBO and expects the biggest adherence of the audience ever seen.

The first time I ever had contact with the series was on Spring of 2019, in a moment of my life that was mostly filled by the anxiety of the last high school year and the passage to the life of a college student. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and felt a lot of pression to decide. Today I keep resorting to FRIENDS as an escape, a reminder of happiness despite the passage of time, an escape and at the same time an eye opening for the reality that was and continues to be the transformation, whatever which.

After all, that was the life that everyone would like to have or to have had.
